Leicester City wins first Premier League as Spurs and Chelsea held for 2-2 draw

Correction — May 6, 2016 This article incorrectly states Leicester stayed at the top of the League table from November 21. In fact, it stayed near the top from November 21.

Wednesday, May 4, 2016

On Monday, Leicester-based football club Leicester City secured their first Premier League title as London-based clubs Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur drew 2–2 at Stamford Bridge.

Leicester City played 36 matches and collected 77 points. On Sunday, they drew 1–1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford. But Monday’s draw eliminated the mathematical possibility of Spurs equalling the point tally of The Foxes with only two matches to play and a lead of seven points.

Leicester lost only three times in those 36 matches, once against Liverpool and twice against Arsenal. Since November 21, after a 3–0 victory against Newcastle United, The Foxes have stayed at first position in the League table.

The players have been fantastic. Their focus, their determination, their spirit has made this possible.

The Foxes were seen as underdogs at the beginning of the season as they managed to escape relegation in the 2014–2015 season where they needed 21 points from their last nine matches. Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy were key players on Claudio Ranieri’s team. Vardy netted 22 goals in 34 appearances in League matches — including goals in 11 matches consecutively, a League record. While Riyad Mahrez won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award last week, Jamie Vardy was voted the footballer of the year by the Football Writers’ Association.

Manager Claudio Ranieri was full of praise for his team’s togetherness and diligence over the course of the season. “The players have been fantastic. Their focus, their determination, their spirit has made this possible. Every game they fight for each other and I love to see this in my players. They deserve to be champions.”

The League trophy is to be presented to The Foxes after their upcoming game against Everton. They also qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in the club’s 132-year history.

How To Sell A Used Car Online}

Submitted by: Vikram KR

Did you know that the best way to sell a used car today is over the internet? When you post an ad online you will be able to reach a much larger number of prospective buyers as compared to putting an ad in the classifieds section of your local newspaper.

There are several sites such as CarZag that have old and new cars for sale online. These sites act as online platforms that facilitate the buying and selling of old and new cars. Car owners who want to sell a used car can simply place an ad with all of the relevant information and prospective buyers who are looking for cars can scour the ads and select one that best suits their requirements and their budget.

If youve never tried selling a vehicle online you may not know how to go about it but dont worry. Its simple really.

You go to the site and register yourself. The registration formalities are simple and straightforward. After you are done, you will be directed to the classifieds ad where you can post details of your vehicle.

The very basic details you will need to enter in the ad include the following:

The make and model of the ca

The year of manufacture

How many miles the car has done since the beginning

The body colo

The type of interiors (whether you have leather seats, etc)

Any special features of the vehicle (have you installed a special audio system or upgraded any features)

After entering these basic details you will have the option to enter any additional details that you want to. Here you may want to mention if youve got a brand new set of tires or anything else extra. All of these little details will make a big difference. If a buyer is trying to decide between two cars that are similar, the one with new tires would definitely sound like a sweeter deal. So dont dismiss any detail no matter how small it sounds.

After you are finished with this, you will get to the part where you can upload photographs if you want to. When you want to sell a used car online, you absolutely should upload photographs. While there is no fixed number of photographs that work best, you should have at least a few that show the car from various angles. Get a few of the exterior and some of the interior too and post them all up with the ad so potential buyers can get a good look at your car. Buyers are always more comfortable if they can see the actual vehicle and you will get more queries than if you post a car sale ad without pictures. This is not surprising at all. A car is a significant investment. Nobody would put down this amount of money without being able to see what they are buying.

If a buyer decides they are interested in buying your vehicle, be prepared to meet up with the buyer in person. Most buyers will want to check the vehicle firsthand so they are satisfied that the vehicle is exactly as you described it in your ad. They will also want to do a test drive before they finalize the deal. As you can see it is easier than ever today to sell a used car by going to a site that has old and new cars for sale online.

Illegal drug found to be used in the manufacture of toys

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

Bindeez beads, a children’s toy from Australia and manufactured by Moose Enterprise in Hong Kong, is being pulled off toy store shelves in the United Kingdom after traces of an illegal drug, which is converted into gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) when ingested, was found inside the toy. At least 20 million toys are affected.

So far at least three children from the U.K. and at least two from Auckland, New Zealand have fallen seriously ill and are currently receiving medical attention. The toy is also sold in the United States as Aqua Dots, with two reports received by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of children needing hospitalization after ingesting the beads.

“We’ve asked all our customers to take them off the shelf while we retest everything to make sure the toys comply with all regulations,” said the company in a statement, although no mandatory recall has been issued for the product. The statement also says that the plant in Hong Kong was not using a chemical mixture approved by the company.

“This substitution was not at any time approved by Moose nor was Moose made aware of any substitution by the supplier,” added the statement.

The toys were supposed to contain a non-toxic chemical known as 1,5-pentanediol, but instead 1,4-butanediol, which is mainly used in creating the illegal drug GHB, was used in the toys. When humans consume 1,4-butanediol, the body converts it into GHB and could make the individual seriously ill, causing headaches, seizures, dizziness and in some cases death. GHB is a natural chemical found in a variety of things such as beef, wine and some varieties of citrus fruits. It is also used as a pharmaceutical which is sold as Xyrem.

Recent animal research indicates that drugs are available for human use which may work as antidotes to the poison, either by hindering its conversion to GHB with 4-methylpyrazole (fomepizole, Antizol) or by blocking GHB’s effectiveness at the receptor (SCH 50911). Rodent testing has found the lethal dose of 1,4-butanediol to range from 1.4 to 2.5 grams per kilogram body weight, but an antidote can increase the lethal dose by a factor of 10.

It is not known how the chemicals got mixed up, but officials for the toy company say that they are continuing the investigation. The toy is currently banned in all of Australia, but the company says all those who bought it will be refunded their money.

“The issue of how a dangerous substance was used in these beads and not the non-toxic substance … that is going to take us a few more days to uncover,” said Australia’s Fair Trade Minister, Linda Burney in a statement to the press.

The toy was recently named Australia’s number one toy for 2007.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Del Rosario to visit China amid South China Sea territorial dispute

Sunday, July 3, 2011

Philippines Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario is scheduled to visit China from July 7 to 9, raising hopes that a territorial dispute between the two countries may be resolved.

A six-nation dispute has escalated in the sea concerning territorial claims to several islands including the Spratly Islands. The area is thought to be rich in natural gas and oil. Both the Philippines and China wish to have a peaceful resolution to this conflict. “I’ve been invited to Beijing and we’re looking for peaceful means to settle the challenges facing us,” said Del Rosario.

The news comes after the United States and the Philippines began a series of naval exercises last week in the South China Sea, scheduled to last for 11 days. A Philippine military commander stated that the drills are part of an annual series of activities taking place under a defense agreement between the two countries and have nothing to do with the territorial dispute.

The Philippines maintains a close relation with the U.S. as a former territory of the nation.

The drills come at a time when several competing disputes in the South China Sea have begun to intensify. “Since February 25th, we actually have noted as many as nine intrusions of different varieties, but clearly becoming more aggressive and more frequent,” said Del Rosario. Several countries in Asia, including China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, and Taiwan, have territorial claims in the area spanning the Spratly and Paracel Islands. The region may be rich in oil and gas reserves. The US and Philippines have urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to address the conflict.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has argued that the United States would remain neutral regarding the disputes. She has also said that the United States has a “national interest” in freedom of navigation, respect for international law, and unimpeded, lawful commerce in the South China Sea.” Both countries are bound by a 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty.

On June 27, the US Senate unanimously passed a motion condemning “the use of force by naval and maritime security vessels from China in the South China Sea.” China, on the other hand, has stated that it will not use force to resolve disputes in the South China Sea.

Thaksin still pervades Thai political landscape

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

Thailand’s fugitive ex-premier, Thaksin Shinawatra is in the news again today, phoning supporters in the country and appealing for no celebration of his sixtieth birthday at Sanam Luang outside the royal palace in Bangkok. This follows some red-shirted United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) supporters vowing to go ahead with the party despite Bangkok‘s Governor, Sukhumband Paribatra, saying he will deny any request.

According to Thailand’s English-language Bangkok Post, UDD leader Shinawat Haboonpad expressed determination to see the July 26 celebration go ahead, “… we will show our civil disobedience and ignore his order”.

The divisive impact of the populist Thaksin stretches back prior to him being ousted by a bloodless military coup in September 2006. As far back as 2005 figures within the Thai establishment were speaking against him; Thaksin used the courts to try and prevent dissemination of negative material, including the publication of a sermon by a respected Buddhist monk who compared him to Phra Devadhat, the Thai Buddhist equivalent of the devil. Bangkokians formed into the yellow-shirted anti-Thaksin People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) accusing the Prime Minister of corruption. Following the military intervention in 2006, and a groundswell of support among rural poor voters, the opposing pro-Thaksin groups formed into the UDD. Despite conviction in-absentia, Thaksin colours Thai politics, and has derailed efforts to stabilise the country’s political institutions.

This past week it has been the lead-up to the December 2008 dissolution of the pro-Thaksin People’s Power Party (PPP) government that has resurfaced. The then-Prime Minister, Somchai Wongsawat was barred from politics and his PPP dissolved by the country’s Constitutional Court following anti-Thaksin yellow shirts occupying Bangkok’s international airport and stranding as many as 300,000 tourists in the country. Now the country’s Foreign Minister, Kasit Piromya, a PAD leader, is facing pressure to step down for his part in the airport siege and blockade.

A report in Monday’s Bangkok Post indicates that Thai authorities continue to pursue Thaksin. The Interior Minister said that an attempt had been made to arrest Thaksin in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, but he had evaded capture and managed to return to Fiji where he remains in exile and a fugitive.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.
