Over 80% of projects are unsuccessful because they are over budget, late, missing function, or a combination. Moreover, 30% of the software projects are so poorly executed that they are canceled before completion. Software project using modern technologies are no exception to this rule. This article is about the best practices for software development projects.

Development process

To have development process for your project is an important thing because all other activities are derived from the process. For most modern software development projects, some kind of spiral-based methodology is used over a waterfall process. There are several choices, including the Rational Unified Process (RUP), IBM Global Services Method, and eXtreme Programming (XP). In many cases it is less important on what process is used than how well it is executed. The commonly used methodologies listed above all contain guidance about how to execute the process and templates for artifacts.

Project Requirements

Gathering project requirements and agreeing on requirements prior to begin any project is must for its success. It s not necessary to collect all requirements before any architecture, design and coding are done, but it is important for the development team to understand what needs to be built. Generally requirements are broken into functional and non-functional. A good way to document functional requirements is using Use Cases. Non-functional requirements describe the performance and system characteristics of the application. It is important to gather them because they have a major impact on the application architecture, design, and performance.

Architecture

Selecting appropriate architecture for your application is key to success. Tried and true practices are called patterns and they range from the classic Gang of Four patterns, Java patterns, to EJB design patterns. Sun\’s equivalent is the Core J2EE Patterns catalog. Most of the projects are failed. The study of these failures has given rise to the concept of antipatterns. They are valuable because they provide useful knowledge of what does not work, and why.

Design

Many applications are either over-designed or under-designed. The two basic principles here are \”Keep it Simple\” and information hiding. For many projects, it is important to perform Object-Oriented Analysis and Design using UML.

Coding

Construction of the code is a fraction of the total project effort, but it is often the most visible. Other work equally important includes requirements, architecture, analysis, design, and test. A best practice for constructing code includes the daily build and smoke test. Martin Fowler goes one step further and suggests continuous integration that also integrates the concept of unit tests and self-testing code.

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Some Disadvantages Of Understanding Addiction As A Disease

By Tom Horvath

In the news media the typical expert describes addiction as a disease. Often these experts work at addiction treatment facilities. It would be easy to conclude that experts agree that addiction is hereditary, incurable and lifelong. In the addiction field this view is referred to as the ‘disease model.’ In fact there is significant disagreement about the disease model, but the scientists and professionals who view addiction in other ways do not receive the same media coverage. Why alternatives to the disease model (there are several) do not get more publicity is a story in itself. However, this article will focus on two reasons not to understand addiction as a disease.

The first disadvantage of the disease model is that, for individuals with addiction problems, it is distracting. If I drink too much alcohol, my attention would best be focused on what I need to do about this behavior. By focusing on reducing or stopping my drinking, perhaps I can be successful on my own, or realize that I need to get outside help. However, if instead I spend my time wondering about whether I am an ‘alcoholic,’ I am not doing anything constructive to address my problems. Wondering whether I am an alcoholic distracts me from actually resolving my drinking problems. Although it may seem foolish (if you don’t have drinking problems) to spend your time wondering about this issue, many individuals who drink too much do so. Unfortunately, the conclusion reached is something like this: ‘Even though I drink too much, I’m not really an alcoholic, so I don’t need to worry about it. Only alcoholics actually need to make changes. I’m just someone who drinks too much.’

This perspective does not make any sense, but it is very common. The heavy drinker can hide behind the conclusion of ‘not being a real alcoholic,’ and avoid change. It seems that no matter how heavy my drinking, there are others who drink more or have more problems from alcohol. I can think of them as alcoholics, but not me! In reality, whatever amount I drink might cause problems, depending on circumstances. I would do better to address my drinking directly, and not be concerned about whether the label alcoholic (or addict) is the right one for me.

A second disadvantage of the disease model is that it can be depressing and de-motivating: ‘I have this disease that I can never get rid of.’ The idea itself is enough to drive me to drink! Rather than motivating me to improve my behavior, the disease model could lead me to feel hopeless. If someone believes in the disease model, and starts drinking, it is easy (and common) to think ‘I can’t help this, I have a disease.’ Rather than moderating (drinking at a low level that does not cause problems) or reducing (drinking too much but less than a binge), a full-blown binge (of alcohol, drugs, or both) can occur. Once the binge occurs it can be taken as more evidence that I really am hopeless, so what is the point of even trying to change? It would be better for me to think that I need to stay focused on my drinking, and not expect complete improvement immediately. I could learn to moderate or stop my drinking, just as I have learned many other things.

Although the experts quoted in the media are likely for a long time to continue to describe addiction as a disease, we each still have the freedom to understand addiction any way we want to. For many of us, not using the labels addict or alcoholic, and having a hopeful perspective on change, will be more helpful.

At least fifteen dead after stampede at Mali mosque

Friday, February 26, 2010

According to a government official, at least 26 people were killed in a stampede on Thursday at a historic mosque in the northwestern city of Timbuktu, Mali.

“There were 26 killed and 40 wounded,” Oumar Sangare, the Internal Ministry spokesman, told Reuters. However, other news agency reports put the death toll as low as fifteen.

An official, who requested to remain anonymous, said the accident could have begun as a result of renovation work on the Djingareyber mosque—which is made primarily of mud, and was built in the fourteenth century. Construction work blocked off some of the roads, and that could have been a factor in the incident. “The mosque is being renovated, financed by the Aga Khan, and the work is carried out by South African specialists,” the official told the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.

“Because of these renovations, the passage on the north side of the mosque is closed off. On that side, to get through, the faithful found an improvised alleyway. But the alley couldn’t take the number of people using it. So there was a stampede. Somebody shouted ‘someone has died’ and panic took over,” the same official went on to say.

Others have remarked that rescue services responded “very quickly” to the stampede, and helped the “many injured.”

The Xinhua news agency reports the stampede started when an elderly woman fell in one of the town streets near the city’s main mosque, where a sermon was being conducted in front of a large crowd; a passersby then rushed to assist the woman, apparently disrupting the crowd’s movement and causing the stampede.

“People were circling the mosque, a ritual at each Mouloud [the observance of the Prophet Mohammed’s birthday] and there was a huge crowd build up,” commented Mohamed Bandjougou, one of the witnesses to the event, to AFP by telephone. “There were at least fifteen dead. The bodies were taken to the morgue.”

Authorities warned the number of injured may actually be higher than reported, saying that “we cannot rule out the fact that the number of those injured will increase because some of them are still hiding in their homes instead of coming to the hospital.” A hospital source commented that some of the people hurt were in critical condition, and needed to be evacuated to the capital, Bamako, as soon as possible.

The mosque’s imam, who gave his name as Asseyuti, commented on the incident. “We’re in mourning. What happened is a real trauma. We accept the will of God. He gives us life, he takes it away,” he said.

According to an official statement, Malian president Amandou Toumani Toure is traveling to Timbuktu from Bamako in light of the stampede.

Alex Sanchez suspended for drugs

Sunday, April 3, 200528 year old Alex Sanchez, outfielder for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, is suspended without pay for 10 days for using a performance enhancing drug. Sanchez is the first player to be suspended under Major League Baseball’s new, stricter drug policy.

The Baseball officials and the players’ union have both decided to not disclose the specific substance which tested positive.

Sanchez originally planed an appeal against the ban, but decided against it. He denies taking any performance enhancing drugs and blames the positive test on over-the-counter vitamins, muscle relaxants and protein shakes that he takes, but has not identified any specific medications as of yet.

England’s elderly face human rights breaches in home care system

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

A report published today by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) finds that, in many cases, England’s home care system breaches the human rights of the elderly it is supposed to serve. The Close to home: older people and human rights in home care report is the result of a twelve-month investigation into care generally provided by local authorities.

Approximately half of those receiving home care, plus friends and family, providing evidence to the inquiry were satisfied with the quality of care provided. However, the report stresses that there are “systemic problems” arising from “a failure to apply a human rights approach to home care provision”. The report asserts that it is generally not the fault of individuals providing care, but serious problems exist as local authorities seem unaware of their obligations under the Human Rights Act and fail to commission, procure, and monitor care accordingly.

The report says articles two, three and eight of the European Convention on Human Rights are frequently being breached. These, respectively, cover an individual’s right to life, protection from inhumane and degrading treatment, and respect for dignity and personal independence. Criticisms include that care is not provided in a common-sense manner, and funding of care for the elderly is at lower levels than for younger people with similar problems and needs.

Do you have elderly relatives receiving care at home? Is the support provided adequate?
Add or view comments

The EHRC’s investigation highlights a range of recurring complaints and attempts to identify the underlying causes; cost is repeatedly mentioned, with use of the private-sector leading to some local authorities offering a “one size fits all” service leaving many elderly feeling they are “a task to be undertaken” and have “little or no choice” as to help received, or when care workers visit. A failure to invest in care workers is noted, with significant responsibility and the wide range of skills required being rewarded with low pay and status; this, the report states, adversely impacts staff retention and, a high turnover of care workers can put the security of care recipients at-risk.

Within the wider investigation, a commissioned independent social report by The Arndale Centre conducted in-depth interviews with a cross-section of 40 elderly individuals receiving home care. As-stressed in the report, those selected were not on the basis of good, or bad, experiences with their – mainly local authority-provided – care. It highlights a widespread feeling amongst those interviewed that they are treated “like a number”, and that aspects of the care provided lead to, or fail to resolve, feelings of social isolation.

The Manchester-based Arndale Centre report concludes that, “[t]he general picture is of a wider home care system in which older people are noteffectively involved: which they do not understand, and which does not often make the extra effort required to involve them in ways tailored to their state of health and other needs”.

nobody to talk [to] face to face. Nobody will knock on that door,[…] a life of isolation.

A recurring theme in the responses of those interviewed is the social isolation that their home care is not adequately addressing. One male interviewee in his seventies who previously used a scooter to get about said in his interview, “I haven’t been out of the house now for about four weeks. I daren’t. The last time I went out on the scooter I hit the kerb and it frightened the living daylights out of me.” Another, an 85-year-old woman who lives alone, expressed sadness at her inability to do normal things, “I would love to go to town to do some shopping. I haven’t been to town for about two years… Wander round the town and have a cup of tea… I’d love that.”

The social isolation many elderly experience was summed up neatly by another woman in her eighties in her interview: “When you go now, I will maybe not talk to anybody till tomorrow; maybe the whole of tomorrow nobody to talk [to]… face to face. Nobody will knock on that door, that is it, a life of isolation.”

The EHRC, having commissioned this report in the face of funding changes and reform of the care system, intends to press for legislative changes to ensure those receiving care at home are given the same protections under the Human Rights Act as those in residential care. In the conclusions of their report they offer to work with, and support, local authorities in understanding and delivering care that respects peoples’ rights and dignity; and, recommend better guidance as to the choices available to the elderly, and their families, be made available.

SBC teams with Scientific-Atlanta for cable TV rollout in 13 US states

Saturday, April 2, 2005

Regional U.S. telephone giant SBC Communications is one step closer to offering cable television to the 18 million households in its 13 state coverage area. The company announced a $195 million contract with Scientific-Atlanta Thursday to provide a video operations center and regional hubs for the new service. Under the brand name, U-verse, the SBC’s television rollout is set to launch in 2006 after field trials begin later this year.

The company is seeking the so-called “triple play,” where a telecommunications company offers voice, data and video in one bundled package. Local telephone companies like SBC have been losing business to cable TV companies, which have added telephone and Internet services in recent years.

In a slew of recent deals, SBC is looking to stop that trend. Within the past six months it has signed alliances with various technology firms to build out a fiber network to the home strategy. For instance, SBC has a $1.7 billion deal with Alcatel to build out its fiber optic network and a 10-year, $400 million, pact with Microsoft to license its IPTV technology to allow multi-channel television to stream over its Internet backbone.

In most of the U.S. only cable TV companies like Comcast have been able to offer the “triple play” of voice, video and data services. But traditional phone companies like SBC and Verizon have been upgrading their copper wire telephone networks to fiber optic. SBC says it plans to spend billions of dollars to overhaul its telecommunications network, saying the aging and brittle copper wires which were originally laid in the early 1900s do not have enough bandwidth to allow television capability.

Expensive Hotels Which Was Merely Ideal For Those My Own Requirements

Submitted by: zal22 1090

My personal work is exclusive through many others. We break my personal week up in between going as well as being primarily based within the workplace. My personal workplace work I could do along with my own sight closed; every therefore often although, the continuous exploring would wear me out and about. My own evening will be frequently produced lengthier in the event that you will find road works, mishaps or perhaps climate similar to compacted snow and rainfall. Unwinding along with calming is really a firm should in the finish of the evening, while around the road.Really the only way to do this can be find high-quality holiday accommodation. An abrupt telephone call coming from go workplace supposed heading for an unfamiliar vacation spot as well as having to alter my personal night of remain in a hotel.

Changing my own routine at the drop of an hat is actually normal with regard to go office and they did it last few days. My partner and i needed to find in the last-minute expensive hotels close to Manchester. It appears upon tomorrow, my own good fortune what food was in. My spouse and i found expensive hotels right away. My conference for that next evening has been just a 15 moment drive aside. In my encounter accommodations on the borders of primary metropolitan areas often end up being less loud compared to their own metropolis heart counterparts.Stansted hotels which are in the borders mark all of the fitting boxes. Relying around the superstar rating, you can find a broad range involving facilities available. They also get his or her own in house eating place which is perfect regarding company people who do not want to go out.

The room itself was huge, airy, much more when compared with adequate. A diverse en-suite rest room, comfortable mattress as well as effective room support were also available including an earlier morning hours wake up contact. My own convention your next day has been with 9am. i really approached the resort employees to get an earlier contact. My spouse and i felt consequently dynamic as I experienced rested significantly well. I was undoubtedly hunting forward to the full British breakfast every day upon provide. The actual cocinero would an exceptional job regarding generating home plate appear along with taste good. People around the road can know how important a fine breakfast is. The place had been very busy, company individuals everywhere. Customers had been welcomed with the many staff which smiled along with were helpful.

One thing My spouse and i hate although, can be hurry hour visitors; yet through the motel it absolutely was extremely easy going. The particular conference and the rest from the evening gone extremely well. This is why you should by no means guide expensive hotels which is positioned within the metropolis centre. Rather select the particular one around the outskirts. I would certainly book any room because hotel once more.
