All major American TV networks show charity concert for Katrina victims

Saturday, September 10, 2005

On Friday, all six major American television networks; ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, WB, and UPN, along with most PBS stations, united in a rare show of solidarity to air a one hour charity concert called Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast.

The concert aired live at 8pm in the Eastern time zone and 7pm in the Central time zone and on tape-delay in the Mountain and Pacific time zones. It was also shown on the Internet and many cable networks such as USA, Bravo and G4.

The show was produced by Joel Gallen, the same man behind the September 11th tribute concert America: A Tribute to Heroes. The show was not censored for political statements but was for obscenities. Gallen did not expect any political statements. Last week, rapper Kayne West made a remark on an NBC charity show A Concert for Hurricane Relief, in which West claimed that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”, which caused controversy.

The concert began with Randy Newman singing “Louisana 1927.” Throughout the concert there were notable acts, such U2 performing “One” with Mary. J Blige. Another moment was Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood and the house band from The Late Show with David Letterman doing a cover of John Fogerty’s “Who’ll Stop The Rain”.

Donations were being solicited for the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

Telecom company AT&T provided toll-free calling and 10 call centers for the event and MCI provided volunteers from their call centers.

BET also held a charity concert called S.O.S (Saving OurSelves), a half-hour before cutting to the main one.

MTV, MTV Overdrive, VH1 and CMT will air a charity show Saturday called ReAct Now: Music & Relief.

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

In a closely fought game Thursday night between the Australian Rollers and the Great Britain men’s national wheelchair basketball team at the Sport Centre at the Sydney Olympic Park, Australia rolled away as 65–51 victors.

The Australians, many with facial hair, met the partially tattooed Great Britain side with a lot of aggression and sometimes borderline violence on the court. Wheelchairs rammed into each other with much greater frequency than in the previous match played between the Australian and German women. Both teams were very vocal on the court and on the bench, loudly telling their teammates what to do or occasionally arguing with the referees. Bench players on both teams demonstrated a lack of creativity in their sideline chanting, with the Rollers chanting “Defense. Rollers. Defense.” and the Great Britain side chanting “Defense. Defense.” The Great Britain side, initially very loud from the bench following a 37–33 half time lead, got quieter as the game progressed. With 6:22 left in the fourth quarter, the game appeared to have gotten away from the referees who answered by calling a technical against Great Britain after one of the Australian players ended up on his back on the court. The call followed a fan screaming from the stands that the game was not supposed to be a contact sport. Following the siren to end the game, both sides shook hands.

Australia plays their last game in pool play in the Rollers & Gliders World Challenge at 7:30pm Sydney time Friday against Japan while Great Britain meets Japan at 12:00pm Sydney time Friday. All three teams are London bound for the Paralympics next month.

Veneers Through A Cosmetic Dentist

byAlma Abell

Veneers are thin porcelain sheet with a thickness of 0.5 to 0.7 mm, covering the front surface of the teeth. Porcelain veneers are one of the most recent advances in modern dentistry. They are used to improve the appearance of teeth. If you want to improve your smile due to cracks or chips, talk with your Cosmetic Dentist about veneers.

Advantages of porcelain veneers

Veneers, compared to other types of dental restorations, have two major advantages. One is that they give the tooth a natural look. Until recently, all materials used by dentists designed to improve the appearance of restored teeth were opaque or translucent. This means that the light falling on the surface of such materials were immediately reflected from the surface without penetrating deep into the dentin. This was not allowed to achieve complete similarity with natural teeth.

Porcelain veneers main advantage, in comparison with all other materials, is their transparency. Light striking on the surface of the porcelain veneer penetrates to a certain depth into the porcelain, and is reflected from the opaque cement and tooth structure to which it is attached. Its quality is so profound that no one can tell the difference from the adjacent natural teeth. With porcelain veneers, there are no spots because porcelain is a ceramic, vitreous material that is smooth and impermeable. This means that the surface does not stain or discolor.

Disadvantages of porcelain veneers

One of the main disadvantages of veneers is that they break down. In this case, it is replaced with a new one. If the veneer falls off the tooth, it can be re-glued it to the tooth. Seeing your Cosmetic Dentist, in this case, is very important.

How To Throw A Summer Patio Party With Outdoor Patio Furniture And Dinnerware

How to Throw a Summer Patio Party with Outdoor Patio Furniture and Dinnerware

by

Murphy Davidohill

A summer patio party is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. For this sunny season, bring out your outdoor patio furniture and get out your most colorful dinnerware. A summer patio party should be relaxed, welcoming and as colorful as summer itself. Here are some great ideas to host your own summer patio party.

Decorate with Dinnerware

Keep your tabletop simple. Opt for a classic wood picnic table and dress it up with colorful dinnerware. Choose dishes separately or mix and match several sets in solid colors. Use colorful plastic glasses to serve the drinks. Fruit juices and cocktails also add color to a table. Display drinks in clear glass jugs for colorful coolers that double up as table decor.

Dress Up Outdoor Patio Furniture with Colorful Cushions

Cushions and throw pillows are a great way to add color to your outdoor patio furniture. Mimic the beautiful colors of summer with a lively blend of solids, stripes and polka dots. Choose bold shades like fire-engine red, cool aquamarine, sunshine yellow, leafy greens and bright oranges. Consider using monogrammed pillows to add a personal touch to your party decor. You can also use boldly patterned area rugs and monogrammed cushions for an informal summer seating arrangement. Place groups of planters full of summer greenery and flowers among the pillows to give your guests the feeling of sitting in a wonderful and exotic summer garden.

Have a Tapas Party

Summer is a great time to throw a tapas party. Serve a mix of appetizers, finger foods and salads on vividly colored serveware. Choose foods for their color as well as their taste to create a wonderful summer spread. Consider serving an antipasto vegetable platter with tender asparagus, baby artichokes, roasted red pepper strips, sliced tomatoes, fresh onion rings and Greek olives as a colorful summer salad.

Have a Utility Basket Handy

Pack an attractive wicker basket full of summer gear. Your guests will thank you for the extra hand wipes, hats, shrugs and sun block. Add some eco-friendly bug spray and mosquito repellent. If you plan to hold the party in the evening, consider adding some light blankets so that guests can stay warm even on cool evenings.

Use elegant outdoor patio furniture and dinnerware to throw a fun summer patio party.

Plant Thorn Synovitis An Interesting Type Of Arthritis}

Submitted by: Nathan Wei

An interesting topic that very few people- even doctors- dont know about , is a condition called plant thorn synovitis.

This problem occurs when a thorn from a plant enters a joint by puncturing it. This can happen during the course of gardening, trimming plants, or even while walking through dense brush where one uses their hands to push away branches.

Once the thorn punctures the joint- usually a joint in the hand- it leaves some plant matter inside the joint. This sets up an acute localized inflammatory response within the synovium- the lining of the joint.

Symptoms include joint swelling, redness, heat, and pain, accompanied by stiffness and reduced range of motion. The inflammatory reaction inside the joint is called synovitis.

Thorny plants that are most often associated with this problem are rose bushes. However, there are other thorny plants that can do this. These include: palm trees, black-thorn shrubs, cacti, bougainvillea, yucca, pyracantha, plum trees, and mesquite trees (Medicinenet.com).

While small hand and finger joints are most often affected, other joints can also be involved.

Symptoms of plant thorn synovitis may not develop for several days or even weeks after the puncture. The patient may not even recall having a puncture because the actual puncture may not have been that painful.

Plant thorn arthritis may be suspected if a patient comes in with a single joint that is inflamed. A careful history may produce the fact that they had been punctured by a plant thorn. Even if the plant thorn was removed by the patient, microscopic amounts of plant matter are left inside the joint and this is what causes the inflammatory response to develop.

The initial procedure is to insert a needle into the joint and draw out fluid to make sure that some other type of infection or other type of inflammatory process such as gout is not responsible for the problem.

Once this is done, then a patient can be sent for x-rays or MRI scanning to better delineate the process. Diagnostic ultrasound can also be of value.

Unfortunately, though, even these sophisticated imaging procedures may not detect the minute plant particles and the patient may need to undergo surgery.

The surgeon will open the joint and remove the entire area of inflamed synovium (joint lining).

Examination of the synovial tissue by a pathologist will show the microscopic pieces of thorny material. In addition, the pathologist will be able to identify what is called a granulomatous reaction. This is a typical biologic response that occurs in body tissue when exposed to a chronic irritant such as plant matter.

Another danger that can occur as a result of a thorny puncture is a septic or infected joint. This is a medical/surgical emergency since untreated infection will cause joint destruction but can also lead to systemic sepsis. Antibiotics and surgical debridement are generally required.

The long term prognosis for plant thorn synovitis is a good one if the diagnosis is suspected and early intervention is instituted.

Prevention is difficult but if plant enthusiasts at least are aware of this potential problem, it makes the diagnosis easier should it occur.
