Typhoon Phanfone strikes Philippines

Saturday, December 28, 2019

Typhoon Phanfone made landfall on the central Philippines from Tuesday night through to Wednesday, killing at least 20 according to Philippine officials on Thursday, and leaving reportedly at least 15,000 stranded at ports.

Phanfone impacted upon popular tourist attractions, such as Boracay and Coron, as well as the Kalibo International Airport. It also blocked roads and forced over 58,000 civilians to evacuate.

Phanfone damaged similar regions to Typhoon Haiyan, which killed over 6,000 people in 2013. Cindy Ferrer, head of a regional civil defense office, said “[Typhoon Phanfone is] like the younger sibling of Haiyan. It’s less destructive, but it followed a similar path”. Philippine Red Cross chair Richard Gordon, in remarks to the BBC, said “A lot of people have lost their homes and they need food”. He also said many areas lost water and power, and might not get them back for weeks.

Typhoon Phanfone continued westward on Thursday, toward the South China Sea and Asia.

Report urges Kenya to ban plastic bags

Wednesday, March 9, 2005File:Plastic bag stock sized.jpg

They are cheap, useful, and very plentiful, and that is exactly the problem, according to researchers. A report issued on Feb. 23 by a cadre of environment and economics researchers suggested that Kenya should ban the common plastic bag that one gets at the checkout counter of grocery stores, and place a levy on other plastic bags, all to combat the country’s environmental problems stemming from the bags’ popularity.

Honolulu man dies after fall into sewage-contaminated harbor

Saturday, April 8, 2006

A Honolulu man who fell into the sewage-contaminated Ala Wai Yacht Harbor died Thursday night of a massive bacterial infection that caused the loss of one of his legs, septic shock, and ultimately organ failure.

Oliver Johnson, 34, a Honolulu mortgage broker, died between 9:15 and 9:30 p.m. HST Thursday (0715-0730 UTC Friday) when his family removed him from life support. On Friday, March 31, Johnson had apparently fallen into the waters of the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, located at the mouth of the Ala Wai Canal on the western side of Waikiki.

At the time, the canal and surrounding beaches were contaminated by over 48 million gallons of untreated sewage. The extent to which the sewage spill contributed to Johnson’s symptoms remains unclear.

Johnson earlier reported that he had fallen accidentally into the harbor, then later indicated that he had been involved in a fight on board a boat and had been pushed or thrown into the harbor waters. A security guard at Johnson’s apartment reported that he was bloodied and soaking wet, and that he stumbled into the lobby and collapsed. Paramedics took Johnson to Straub Hospital where he was treated and released.

Johnson reported steadily worsening leg pain that weekend and was admitted to Queen’s Hospital on Sunday with breathing difficulties. Doctors that night amputated his left leg above the knee to try to halt the spread of the infection, and Johnson was placed in a medically induced coma.

Initially suspecting that Johnson had contracted streptococcus-caused necrotizing fasciitis, doctors later found that Johnson had contracted three different bacteria, two of which, vibrio vulnificus and aeromonas hydrophila, have flesh-eating properties. Despite the amputation, Johnson’s condition steadily worsened to the point where doctors said that his other leg and left arm would also have needed to be amputated to save his life.

An autopsy performed by the Honolulu medical examiner’s office reported that Johnson had suffered from massive organ failure caused by septic shock. The medical examiner noted that Johnson had a vulnificus infection on his foot and suffered from chronic alcoholic liver disease which may have contributed to the infection’s taking hold.

The Honolulu Police Department has opened a third-degree assault case; with Johnson’s death, homicide detectives are also investigating. State health officials are also investigating Johnson’s illness.

Johnson’s family has retained an attorney to investigate the causes surrounding his illness and death. It is not clear yet whether any legal action will be taken.

Leadership: Learning From Musicians

Submitted by: Harald Anderson

I have been a musician most of my life. In small bands or orchestras that I have participated in I have had others lead me. Recently I had the opportunity to lead a small orchestra. It struck me that this is a powerful metaphor for what leadership consists of.

Leading other musicians was not something I had not done before, so, I was apprehensive whether I would be able to lead correctly or not. I wondered how the others would respond to me. But, most of all, I was scared about looking foolish.

I certainly had my concerns as to whether I would measure up.

Any time that I have been in front of a group of people the first thing that I sense is that people want to see someone who is in charge and in control. I have learned that people are very forgiving if you take responsibility for everything that occurs and remain accountable for the effects that you create.

As the leader of an orchestra you at time can t help but look foolish. You can imagine the frustration of engaging musicians to perform and as things begin to unravel they all look to you to fix it. What I learned from this experience was that a good leader is willing to make mistakes. I also learned that clarity of communication is what great leaders focus on.

In my role as orchestra leader I did look foolish but deliberately. I was training a group of aspiring managers to step into their own leadership. My role was to make it convenient for them to take the lead. The end result was that each guest leader did so well that some of them even commented that I was an easy act to follow. I had succeeded in my mission.

One of my joys in life is to push people beyond any perceived level of self consciousness so that they can perform optimally without concerns about judgments.

My strategy has always been to push each people into situations where they are expected to lead the audience so that they discover their own potential. So, while a soundtrack played in the background I performed my act and quickly passed the baton to a random attendee and took the seat of my surprised successor, who then took a short stint as leader. And, so the game continued with each subsequent conductor passing on the baton to the next conductor at their whim. I was happy to see that the audience of aspiring leaders responded to each conductor. Their styles varied yet the audience caught on to each leader s style and direction.

The lessons we had learned were then spelled out:

– Each leader s style is different, and no style of leading is right or wrong. Finding your own authentic voice is a truly powerful and exhilarating experience.

– Leadership and Authority are not the same thing. People respond to the possibility of pleasure or the threat of pain but creating a consensus is what great leaders do.

– Leadership goals and gains depend upon your talent pool.

– Your leadership approach is in accordance with the rules you re expected to follow.

– Your style is that of a leader you have been impressed with.

– Great Leaders Get The Best Out of Their Team

What was really gratifying was that each guest conductor remarked how different the experience had been from the other side of the table, so to speak. They enjoyed the experience much more than just sitting passively, and after going through the experience they could better appreciate the role, risk and responsibility of each who led that day.

Good conductors make beautiful music. The individual musicians playing the strings, brass, percussion and woodwinds put in their best. Similarly, the most effective leaders get the best out of their teams by tapping on their strengths and together they make beautiful music.

As a leader you need to connect with the various temperaments of your team. You cannot have the same style to deal with the quiet ones as you have with the aggressive ones. You must be able to appreciate the various talents of your group.

Shift the Focus

The most important change a leader has to make is the shift from being self conscious to the results and bringing out the best in others. Once you have overcome the anxiety about how you appear to other, things begin to fall in place. You can then give all your attention to the people in front of you and get the best out of them.

Wikinews interviews candidate for Minneapolis mayor Philip Sturm

Thursday, May 13, 2021

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail in the first week of May to Philip Sturm, a candidate running in the mayoral election of the US city of Minneapolis, Minnesota set to take place November 2 alongside that for city council, two seats of the Board of Estimate and Taxation and nine seats of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Sturm discussed information about his campaign and policies with Wikinews.

Sturm is a veteran who served from 1999 to 2003 in the US Marine Corps, stationed on Okinawa Island, Japan before performing operations in the US invasion of Afghanistan and 2003 invasion of Iraq. According to his web site, Sturm has a career in “manufacturing and operations”. According to his web site’s ‘civic vitae’ section, Sturm was co-chair for the DFL (Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party), District 62 in 2005 and a member of Veterans for Kerry.

He was a volunteer special deputy in Hennepin County, Minnesota, a member of the 9-1-1 emergency helpline workgroup for the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), the 9/11 and GWOT (Global War on Terrorism) Remembrance Task Force with the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and the racial equity fund with H.B. Fuller.

According to Minneapolis’ official website Jacob Frey won the last election in 2017 receiving 44.69% of the vote in the final round of voting. KSTP-TV reported Frey announced his run for re-election January 21. Sturm registered his candidacy on March 22.

Genetically altered mice are “superathletes”

Friday, November 2, 2007

Researchers at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio have announced the creation of transgenic mice with substantially improved athletic endurance, which live and breed longer and are more aggressive than genetically unmodified siblings, and are leaner despite consuming 60% more food. The mice have been dubbed “mighty mice” or “supermice” by the popular press and have been compared to cyclist Lance Armstrong.

The changes were created by adding an extra copy of a single gene, PEPCK-C. This gene is already present in the mouse genome, but the modified gene is designed to be strongly active (transcribed) in skeletal muscle. (The natural copy of the gene, most active in the liver, continues to function normally). The gene mediates a crucial rate controlling step of gluconeogenesis and glyceroneogenesis, and its activity helps to allow energy production by the mitochondrial citric acid cycle. In the transgenics, more energy is available to muscle through the burning of fatty acids, with much less production of lactate (a chemical that leads to sore muscles when one exercises). This is not as major a change to the mouse genome as it might seem to the layperson. The PEPCK-C gene is already present in the mouse and a variety of natural mutations could likely cause similar results. The study appears today in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in a paper with lead author Parvin Hakimi from the laboratory of Richard W. Hanson.

The altered mice can run at 20 meters per minute (0.75 miles per hour or 1.2 kilometers per hour) for up to six kilometers (nearly four miles) without stopping. The average treadmill time for strenuous exercise on a 25-degree incline is 31.9 minutes, well in excess of the 19 minute average of unmodified mice. Females can breed at two and a half years of age, whereas most female mice cannot breed after the first year.

A colony of 500 mice has been bred, starting from six independent germline transformations (“founder” mice). The level of PEPCK-C in muscle is 9 units per gram of muscle as opposed to only 0.08 in normal mice. Levels of triglycerides and the number of mitochondria are also increased.

Hanson said that he did not expect that the results would be applicable to humans due to both practical and ethical considerations in addition to the fact that the genes might not function the same way in humans.

This is not the first time that the press has dubbed a genetically modified mouse a “mighty mouse”. Earlier scientists at John Hopkins University announced that they had made mice with massively increased muscle mass that were larger and stronger than their normal cousins. These alterations increased strength rather than endurance through the genetic modification of myostatin and follistatin, or by injection of a soluble form of ACVR2B to block myostatin activity in normal mice.
