Nokia files lawsuit against Apple

Friday, October 30, 2009

Mobile phone and computer manufacturer Nokia is filing a lawsuit against Apple over patent infringements. The infringements include speech coding, wireless data, security and encryption technology Nokia claims is used in Apple iPhones.

According to a Nokia press release, 40 other companies are paying royalties to them in return for the use of their patented technology. Therefore, Nokia wants Apple to also pay for its usage.

“The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for,” Ilkka Rahnasto, Nokia’s Vice President of Legal & Intellectual Property, said in the press release. “Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia’s intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia’s innovation.”

One industry analyst told PC World that that he believes Nokia is seeking 1–2% royalties per device. Based on the number of iPhones sold since its 2007 release date, that figure would amount to approximately 400 million USD.

Ben Wood, research director at CCS Insight, said, “It is almost inconceivable that someone can produce a mobile phone without using Nokia patented technologies,” showing how widespread Nokia’s mobile technology is.

In Apple’s SEC 10-K, Apple responded to Nokia claims. “The complaint alleges that these patents are essential to one or more of the GSM, UMTS and 802.11 wireless communications standards, and that the Company [Apple] has the right to license these patents from plaintiff [Nokia] on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms and conditions. Plaintiff seeks unspecified FRAND compensation and other relief. The Company’s response to the complaint is not yet due. The Company intends to defend the case vigorously,” said Apple.

The Nokia v. Apple lawsuit is set to take place in a Delaware District Court.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

Uninvited couple passes Secret Service checkpoint, crashes White House state dinner

Thursday, November 26, 2009

A couple entered a White House state dinner when they were univited, passing through several layers of security, and socialized with high-profile guests Tuesday night.

Tareq and Michaele Salahi from northern Virginia arrived at the party at approximately 7:15 pm Tuesday night. They were formally dressed as they passed by a crowd of reporters and cameramen waiting for VIP guests to arrive, even though the couple was neither invited nor on the guest list. A White House official has stated that the couple was never seated at a table.

Although there was a Secret Service checkpoint that failed to follow proper procedures, the couple still passed through the same security checkpoints as all other guests at the dinner did. A Secret Service spokesman has stated that nobody was under any threat, but it is unclear whether Mr. and Mrs. Salahi were ever near President or Mrs. Obama or the guests of honor, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur.

Mr. and Mrs. Salahi later posted photos of themselves at the dinner on Facebook. The couple is known around Washington for promoting wine and polo in Virginia, and they are hoping to become stars in the reality TV show The Real Housewives of Washington.

Basic Steps For Taking A Bath For Dogs

Basic Steps For Taking A Bath For Dogs

by

maxinekramer

Not only love gets stink, but also your dog too once he gets into muddy places and get into his extreme sports!\\r\\n\\r\\nWashing or bathing your dog could be fun! However, it could be difficult if he is not comfortable with the bath tub. So the tendency here is, he will keep on moving.\\r\\n\\r\\nFor newbies out there, below are some tips on washing your dogs. Giving them a regular bath time is important from puppy-age until they grow up. At first, they will resist it, but soon they will look forward to bath time.\\r\\n\\r\\n1. Prepare a workspace. By the way, make sure that the workspace is good a place for cleaning your dog and make sure it is clean. Prepare all the items you will need like towels, dog shampoo, dog conditioner (if needed or advised to use by your vet) and a sponge. Lay it out so it\\\\\\\’s close at hand when needed. Make sure these won t be kicked and splashed by your dog. Pull over the hose or turn on the water and flood the bathtub. It is very important to get the right temperature as most dogs have more sensitive skin.\\r\\n\\r\\n2. Brush the dog\\\\\\\’s coat thoroughly. Combing or brushing the coat of your dog is very important as you can check if there any skin/coat/health issues while relaxing and showing your dog some love. Once you spot any ticks, remove it by yourself.\\r\\n\\r\\n3. Choose a good shampoo which is safe or recommended for your dog. If your dog scratches a lot, maybe the causes are the parasites, allergies, or simple skin irritation. Get a good anti-flea shampoo at a pet store or retail store. Some dog shampoos are formulated with oatmeal. These shampoos help reduce irritation.\\r\\n\\r\\nRinsing your dog well after the bathing reduce irritation too. If you have a snap-on hose use it. It is designed to help you rinse your dog thoroughly. The snap-on attachments can be used for both sink (especially for those who have small or toy dogs) and shower (for larger dogs). Always rinse the dog with clean water. Some of the snap-on attachments have nice long hoses and sprayers. With that, you can simply hold the sprayer upside down under the dog to rinse the belly.\\r\\n\\r\\n4. If your dog\\\\\\\’s coat is wet, apply the shampoo. Start with the head. Massage shampoo to all of his creases and under his front legs and neck. Use your thumbs or fingers to massage in a circular motion. Thoroughly scrub the areas where dirt usually occurs.\\r\\n\\r\\n5. Wash the head and face so you can remove the fleas. If your dog shampoo won t harm the eyes or won t cause irritation to the eyes of your dog, it will be easier for you to wash the head part. In rinsing, get a warm damp flannel and gently rub his face and under his chin. By the way, use warm water whenever you will wash your dog. Warm water may shock any fleas. Don t let the shampoo go to your dog s eyes, nose, ears, or mouth.\\r\\n\\r\\nThe Inner ears are usually the hiding place of fleas. Breeds with big ears like Shih-Tzu, Bloodhound, Maltese, etc. are prone to infections when ears got wet inside. For these kinds dogs, wash the inner part with a slightly damp wash cloth.\\r\\n\\r\\n6. Continue rinsing your dog until the water from his fur runs clear. If your dog shies from rinsing his face, use your hand to bring water from the faucet to his face repeatedly to rinse. You may also use a wet wash cloth to wash off the water.\\r\\n\\r\\n7. Lay the towel over your dog\\\\\\\’s back, and rub your dog until he gets dry. The inner part of his ears should be dry, so you must double check these by rubbing with a towel. Expect that your dog will shake itself when wet, though, so be careful. In the winter, lay a dry towel on the floor and use a hair dryer and a dog brush to dry and brush your dog.\\r\\n\\r\\nYou can spray your dog with one of the dog perfume. You can get this at any dog store. Just be careful in getting a perfume as some dogs may be allergic. So you better consult your vet or a professional groomer before you use it on your dog.\\r\\n\\r\\nFor those breeds that are prone to ear infections, use 2 drops of a vet-supplied rinse that will help dry the ears.\\r\\n\\r\\nIf you want to lessen your problem in taking a bath to your dog, you better get a good bathtub like the

South Korean police clamp down on protests against US beef

Monday, June 30, 2008

South Korean authorities are refusing to allow more protests against the government’s decision to allow beef imports from the United States, after hundreds of people were injured in clashes with riot police overnight Saturday.

Around 300 police buses blocked protesters from entering the plaza in front of Seoul City Hall on Sunday, where a candlelight vigil was scheduled for that night. Any rally held after sunset without police permission is considered illegal. Nevertheless, the daily vigils have continued for weeks, with as many as 80,000 in attendance.

After the plaza was sealed off, a group of about 1,700 protesters gathered in nearby streets, chanting slogans that urged President Lee Myung-Bak to cancel his decision allowing U.S. beef imports. Around 70 people were detained by police for illegally occupying roads, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported, but no major clashes occurred.

Over 200 protesters and police officers were injured in Saturday’s protests. The demonstration turned violent when some protesters tried to drag away police buses used to prevent entry into Cheongwadae, the President’s house. Riot police responded by spraying water cannons and fire extinguishers at the protesters, who threw stones, water bottles and eggs at police.

The candle-lit vigils, which were initially peaceful, have mutated into violent protests organized by a small faction.

Government officials said they would not tolerate violent, illegal demonstrations. “The candle-lit vigils, which were initially peaceful, have mutated into violent protests organized by a small faction,” said Justice Minister Kim Kyung Han. He vowed to “chase those who instigate violent protests” and “bring them to justice”. Kim warned that the government might begin using water laced with tear gas against protesters, even though tear gas has been banned since 1999.

In April, President Lee Myung-Bak agreed to resume the importing of U.S. beef, which was banned in 2003 after the United States discovered its first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease. Lee has faced a major backlash from this decision, amid fears of the possible spread of this sometimes fatal disease. He was forced to publicly apologize, and all but one of his top advisers were fired.

Jang Dae-hyun, a spokesman for the protesters, suggested that the police should stop using harsh tactics against protesters, which he says would lead to less violence. “We’ve been supporting peaceful rallies, but the police crackdown is too harsh,” Jang said. One protester, Kim In-seok, stated, “We are just here to express our opinions. I can’t understand why this government tries to ban our rally.”

On Monday, police raided the offices of two civic groups that have led the rallies. Documents, computers, pickets, flags, and other materials relating to the demonstrations were confiscated, and the leader of the group AntiMadCow was arrested on charges of staging illegal rallies, Yonhap reported.
