Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai discharged from hospital

Friday, January 4, 2013

The Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by the Taliban for campaigning for education for girls, was discharged yesterday from the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham, England after success in the first stage of her medical treatment.

In October, Yousafzai was shot by Taliban forces on a school bus in Mingora, Swat District, Pakistan. She was given emergency treatment in Pakistan and then flown to Britain for treatment at a specialist unit which deals with injured soldiers.

Dave Rosser, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust medical director, gave a statement about Yousafzai’s release from hospital: “Malala is a strong young woman and has worked hard with the people caring for her to make excellent progress in her recovery. Following discussions with Malala and her medical team, we decided that she would benefit from being at home with her parents and two brothers. She will return to the hospital as an outpatient and our therapies team will continue to work with her at home to supervise her onward care.”

She is due to return to hospital in a few weeks for cranial reconstructive surgery.

Two Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants close in Buffalo, New York, USA

Friday, May 11, 2007

At least two Kentucky Fried Chicken [KFC] restaurants, operated by G & H Restaurant Specialties, have closed in Buffalo, New York “for remodeling,” according to signs placed on the front doors of at least one location on Elmwood Avenue and Bryant Street in Buffalo. The other KFC is located on East Delavan Avenue, also in the City of Buffalo.

Despite the claim of closing for remodeling, the Erie County Health Department says that several health code violations were found at both locations. The most recent violation was logged by the health department in March at the Elmwood location for failing to keep food stored at correct temperatures. Violations were also cited for failing to keep cooking supplies and equipment sanitary and for not supplying hot water to the bathroom for employees.

G & H Restaurant Specialties has not released a statement regarding the violations, but the corporate offices in Louisville, Kentucky for KFC said, “our franchisee has finalized a plan for some structural repairs… The units will be temporarily closed while these building maintenance issues are addressed. [They will be] re-opened as soon as the repairs are complete.”

The health department also gave violations out to the East Delevan store for failing to maintain a clean floor throughout the restaurant and for not stopping food from becoming contaminated. Several rat traps were also found inside the storage cooler and around the kitchen area, but the establishment was “not free of rodents,” said Commissioner of the Erie County Health Department, Dr. Anthony Billittier.

Billittier also said that caulking and traps were seen on the outside of the East Delevan restaurant, which was an attempt to keep the rats out. “It shows that they’re trying to take care of a problem. But it also shows that they have a problem.”

As of Thursday, May 10, 2007, the Elmwood KFC has yet to reopen. It is not known if the East Delevan location opened today or not.

Identifying Medical School Admission Requirements

Medical schools prepare students for a career in the field of medicine. They train the students to become nurses, doctors, therapists, technicians and administrators. They offer many options for medical degrees. So, students can choose the curriculum that is more likely to meet their personal goals and expectations.

The admission criteria is different for different medical schools but almost all the medical schools require taking the MCAT, specific coursework and obtaining a degree. The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized examination for prospective medical students in the United States. In addition to scientific concepts and principles, it demands critical thinking, problem solving, reading and writing skills from the candidate.

The sections of the MCAT are similar to the required coursework: physical sciences, biological sciences, verbal and a writing sample. The best way to get good score in MCAT is to get MCAT test prep course. It has been estimated that 70 to 80 percent of all the medical applicants have taken an MCAT test prep course. There are various other preparatory materials available as well. These include both print and computerized practice tests, various books and classroom based courses offered by many test preparation companies.

There are also many co-curricular activities that are absolutely necessary to be a competitive applicant. Some schools even deny an interview if the applicant can not show enough activities on the application. Most medical schools do not consider the applicant seriously if he has never been in a clinical setting.

In general, the GPA, the MCAT scores, the application material, the recommendation letters (written by faculty, physicians or managers who have interacted with the applicant in co-curricular activities), and personal interview are the main areas used by admission committees to evaluate candidates. Medical schools look for candidates who are passionate about medicine as a profession. So, a candidate needs to show that he is willing to spend four years, studying a topic he loves, learning it and building on it. They are looking for people who are willing to take the time and effort to make a serious contribution.

However, Harvard University is the top most medical school; the choice of the medical college decides the future of the candidate. So it is necessary to consider certain other issues, besides the reputation of the medical school. The candidate should be aware of the courses being offered by the medical school and its admission criteria. The cost of the school and its physical location should be considered too, as the candidate spends a few important years of his life there.

Illinois high schools now required to buy insurance for athletes

Tuesday, August 6, 2013

This past Sunday, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed into law a bill known as “Rocky’s Law” that requires Illinois high schools, through the local school district, to buy catastrophic injury insurance up to US$3 million or medical costs for up to five years, whichever one comes first, that covers student athletes. The insurance must cover student athletes while they are competing.

The legislation was named after Rasul “Rocky” Clark. In 2000, the Eisenhower High School football player became paralyzed from the waist down as a result of a tackle during a game. His school based health insurance covered the costs of his medical treatment. A legislator sponsoring the bill noted that the need for this type of insurance is rare. Clark’s mother attended the legislation signing. Her son died last year.

Before parents can claim money from school insurance, they first must pay out US$50,000. Schools have until January 1, 2014 to comply with the law. Schools cannot charge students more than US$5 to defray the cost of insurance. If a school district already requires student to be covered through private health insurance, they are exempted from this law.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Caring For An Aging Parent Tips For Easing The Burden

Submitted by: Gregory Weldy

Scary. Exhausting. Life-changing. These are just a few of the thoughts that run through an adult child s head when they start to think about caring for an aging parent. It s understandable considering multi-generational homes haven t been common in modern America. But finding a smart eldercare solution doesn t have to send you running for the headache meds. These tips and tricks will help make finding a caring for aging parent strategy that creates a happier parent and a more relaxed you.

Encouraging social activities is an important part of a good eldercare solution. It s easy to find activities an aging parent might enjoy. For example, many newspapers print a weekly calendar of senior activities. You can also check online for local senior groups. Don t forget to look for adult day care services as well. These facilities offer a variety of activities, from music lessons to field trips. Adult day services can be an excellent resource for working families or for caregivers who need a few hours of respite care.

Since social contact is a critical part of an eldercare solution, don t let lack of suitable transportation stop your loved one from finding interesting activities. Your phone book s city or municipal services section will direct you to senior-friendly transportation.

Your family is another great source of social activities. Start a Sunday brunch tradition or take a walk every Friday evening. Find an activity that everyone or almost everyone will enjoy, and then make it a non-negotiable part of your schedule.

Don t go it alone. Caring for an aging parent is one of the most stressful family situations. In fact, research shows that family caregivers are more prone to conditions such as depression and anxiety. Get the help you need to care for your parent the right way. For example, ask a crafty neighbor to help pull out and put up holiday decorations or enlist your college-age son to pick up groceries. An eldercare solution is much less stressful if you take the time to look for help.

Open communication with your parent s health care team can also ease the burden of caring for an aging parent. Make time to take your senior parent to medical appointments. If you can t go, ask a trusted family member. By having a second set of ears, you can ensure that everyone understands the doctor s treatments and recommendations.

Part of a less-stressed eldercare solution includes making copies of a parent s health care documents, like medical records, insurance policies, etc. By keeping this information at hand, you won t find yourself scrambling to access important information needed during a medical crisis.

Caring for aging parent strategies should also include learning more about your parent s health care plans. Do you know how Medicare works? How will Mom apply for Medicaid, and what determines if she s eligible? Arming yourself with knowledge now will make life easier when unexpected situations happen.

When it comes to creating a caring for aging parent plan, you don t need to be a quivering, stressed out mess. Prevent future stress by planning your eldercare solution now.

MG Rover sold to Nanjing Auto

Friday, July 22, 2005

Administrators PriceWaterHouseCoopers (PWC) have announced that the British car company MG Rover and its engine manufacturer Powertrain Ltd has been sold to Chinese company Nanjing Automobile for an unknown sum of money. The company beat bids from Shanghai Automotive (SAIC), despite being the smaller of the two.

MG Rover collapsed this Spring, after struggling to make a profit for several years.

SAIC had tried to buy only the engine plant and then transfer it to China, but in June Nanjing Automobile approached PWC with a combined bid for both the car manufacturing company and Powertrain. This Monday SAIC bid for both but the offer was inferior to Nanjing’s.

Nanjing has indicated that it too will move the engine production plant to China, along with some car manufacturing. However it also intends to continue building cars in Britain, and establish an engineering research and design centre there in an effort to expand its sales globally. Nanjing intends to start hiring at once.

Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend And So Are Payday Loans

By Brendon Heins

‘But I prefer a man who lives

And gives expensive jewels A kiss on the hand may be quite continental, But diamonds are a girl’s best friend’

These words from the song ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ were made famous by the quintessential blonde femme fatale Marilyn Monroe. And indeed, from her time to your time, diamonds are a girl’s best friend! Swarovski, moissanite, and cubic zirconia simply cannot compare to the glamour, allure and enduring quality of diamond. Kind of reminds you of Marilyn Monroe compared with the ditzy blondes of Hollywood today.

Fine Diamonds, Fast Payday Loans

And now you have to have it right here, right now for your own reasons – maybe the high school class reunion is coming up, maybe you are bridesmaid, and maybe you are stocking up on fashion accessories. Fine Diamonds, Fine Choosing

Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend but you have to make your diamond jewelry your personal best friend. You have to choose based on cut, color, clarity and carat (4 Cs) to suit your preferences, passions and plans.

You can expand your knowledge of diamonds’ 4 Cs to enable critical choosing when you do get to a Tiffany store or any other jewelry store for that matter. Read on:

– Color can be the most important determinant of the diamonds’ value. Indeed, you can assume that ‘colorless’ diamonds are more valuable though you also have to know that not all ‘colorless’ diamonds are of lesser value.

– Clarity pertains to the visible flaws within the diamonds. Again, you are safe to assume that the less flaws present, the more you have to shell out for the jewelry. If in doubt, ask for a magnifying glass.

– Cut allows the diamonds’ facets to shine by reflecting light, which you see as the fire in the diamond. You can choose from many diamond cuts like round, oval, marquise, radiant, pear-shaped, emerald and heart-shaped. Your preference will determine which cut suits you best.

– Carat is the weight of the diamond in its entirety. In reverse order as the above Cs, you should not assume that just because a diamond is big, it is automatically more valuable than the smaller diamond.

Of course, just looking at diamonds set in gold and surrounded by other precious stones can make you stand in awe so much so that you can forget the 4 Cs. Still, it never did hurt a girl to ask about the history behind the jewelry!

Just make sure that you pay your payday loans on time lest you find yourself pawning your coveted diamond ring. Beyond that, you can make other drool with envy from your best friend.
