China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

Information Investment Planning Retirement Achieve Your Retirement Goals

By Josh Neumann

So you’re looking for information on investment for planning your retirement? The truth is, investing is the most important vehicle to help skyrocket you to achieving your financial goals. Without the power of compounding interest, you simply won’t have enough money for your retirement years.

The sad reality is that most people reach their retirement years without nearly enough money to support them and their lifestyle. Therefore, they either have to severely scale back their plans in their later years, or continue working just to make enough to survive.

All of this could have been easily avoided with some simple retirement and investment planning. So which investment vehicles are best to get you to your retirement goals? There really is no right or wrong answer to this question.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3Kjq18iH6M[/youtube]

The truth is, many investors have made a fortune in many different fields, whether it be real sate investing, stock market, etc. So which is the right one for you? The best way is to pick one you are interested in, and focus on that.

However, the most important part is to pick one avenue of investment and focus on that. Don’t dabble in many fields; focus in on one, and stay with that.

For instance, if you decide to become a real estate investor, don’t also invest some in penny stocks, futures, foreign currency exchange, etc. It will simply eat away at your time you could be spending finding more real estate deals.

Now, here’s by far the most important component no matter which retirement planning investment vehicle you decide to go worth; find someone who’s already successful in that field, and model their success. For any result you want to achieve in the world, there are already people who’ve successfully done it.

Therefore, you could either stumble around, make a million mistakes until you learn how to be successful (like most do) or cut years off your learning curve by learning from others and modeling their success. Also, you might want to consider an investment in a financial retirement planning services company.

No, don’t completely surrender your financial future to these companies; however, these experienced companies can certainly give you some advice that will be helpful in helping you map out where you want to be in your retirement years and how to get there. Hopefully this information on investment for planning your retirement will help you achieve your goals, no matter how lofty they may be. Remember, don’t limit yourself in this process; think big, believe you can have it, and it will be yours.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Friday, March 10, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council of Buffalo voted on Tuesday to send the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal “to committee for further discussion”, after citing the need for more public involvement.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a development proposal by the Savarino Construction Services Corporation, a project designed by the architect Karl Frizlen of The Frizlen Group. The hotel would be placed on the southeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo.

To make way for the project, at least five buildings located at 1109 to 1121 Elmwood Ave would be demolished. At least two properties on Forest Avenue could also be demolished. The Elmwood properties, according to Eva Hassett, Vice President of Savarion Construction, are “under contract”, but it is unclear if Savarino Construction actually owns the Elmwood properties. Hans Mobius, a former mayorial candidate, is still believed to be the current owner the properties. Mobius also owns 607 Forest Avenue.

The properties 605 and 607 Forest Avenue could also be included in the proposal according to Hassett.

“We would use a Special Development Plan to rezone 1119-1121 Elmwood and 605 Forest to a C-2 zoning category,” stated Hassett. It is possible that Savarino Construction may try to obtain a variance for 605 Forest, which would allow them to enforce eminent domain, should the hotel be allowed to go forward.

The building at 607 Forest was also discussed to be rezoned, but it is unclear what the plans would be for that property. During the February 28 Common Council meeting, Hassett stated that the properties 605 and 607 were “now off the agenda”.

Pano Georgiadis, owner of Pano’s Restaurant at 1081 Elmwood, owns the property at 605 Forest and attended Tuesday’s Common Council meeting.

“Having a hotel is a bright idea. We all love the idea of a hotel, but the way that it is presented, is wishful thinking. This hotel does not fit. It’s like putting two gallons of water in a gallon jug, it does not fit. At the last meeting, the architect admitted that they are planning to put the undergound parking lot and the hotel, right at the property line. If I open my window, I will be able to touch the wall, that goes fifty feet high”, said Georgiadis.

“There is a problem having a seventy-two room hotel and fifty-five parking spaces. That means that all the other cars will spill all over the neighborhood. The footprint is simply too small. If you have a bigger [parking] lot, and a smaller hotel, I will welcome a hotel. I have a parking lot at my own business, and I am chasing people all day long. Remember, the city says it has ‘zero tolerance [for illegal parking]’. Try telling that to the guy from Albany who came to see his kids, that are going to Buffalo State, who would get tickets totaling over a hundred dollars”, added Georgiadis.

The city’s Planning Board is scheduled to meet on March 14, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. about the proposal. Although a discussion will take place, no vote is expected to be taken.

At the moment, none of the properties are zoned for a hotel. Savarino Construction plans on asking for a C2 zoning permit. If that does not work, they plan to implement a new zoning plan called a “special development plan” which would allow for only a hotel on the site. That zone would not be able to be changed.

“This [project] justifies Mobius’s refusal to invest in any maitenance[sic] or improvements”, on the properties said Clarence Carnahan, a local resident. “Where were the Council persons over the years? Where were the city inspectors over the years, to make sure that he maintained and improved his properties? The government was supposed to be protecting, not being preditorial. I see a predatorial issue here when it comes to this hotel. Over the years: Why has the local government been disfunctional when it came to Mobius’s properties? Refusal to invest in improvements, doesn’t that sound like a slumlord? Maybe I am missing a point here, but what kind of messages does this send to other slumlords that havn’t[sic] been jailed or fined? It’s [the hotel] trying to be pushed through.”

Carnahan also presented signs for residents and or business owners who are opposed to the hotel, that could be placed in windows or on stakes in the yard. Some of the signs said, ‘No tell hotel’, ‘Hans off, no hotel’, ‘It takes more than a hotel to make a village’. and ‘Keep Elmwood free, no hotel’. Carnahan plans on making more signs for a protest to be held on Saturday March 18, at 2:00 p.m. (EST) on Elmwood and Forest. Some signs were given to individuals after the meeting.

“First things first, Hans is the problem, and I don’t think it has been addressed. Let’s roll back the clock on this project. What can we do with Hans? There is such thing as eminent domain, which could be of greater interest to the community, to seize the property at its lowest assessed value”, said Nancy Pollina, co-owner of Don Apparel with Patty Morris at 1119 Elmwood. “There are so many ideas that have not been explored and we are about to give this parcel away, to a big developer.”

Mobius has not returned any calls by Wikinews regarding the situation.

A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained a letter, exclusively, addressed to one of the five business owners from Hans Mobius stating:

There is a proposal to develop my property which you are currently renting. Because of opposition to this development, it does not look like it will happen. I will let you know if there any changes.

Despite the letter, there have been no plans or decisions made to end the proposal.

To date, none of the business owners or residents of 1119-1121 Elmwood have received an eviction notice.

Business owners and residents gave an indication of what they would like to see happen at the corner; a project similar to one done locally last year. There, developers renovated two buildings on Auburn and Elmwood Avenues, merging the buildings into one thus allowing for more shop space. Among some of the shops to move in after the development were Cone Five Pottery, The Ruby Slipper, and Abraham’s Jewelers. Prior to the renovation work, the left building in the picture was boarded up for several years. Many of the concerned locals would like to see a similar development on Forest and Elmwood.

Rocco Termini, a developer in Buffalo, proposed a similar design at the February 28 community meeting

In an interview after the February 28 meeting, Termini stated, “I will be willing to take a look at this myself, or I would be more than happy to be partners with Sam, Sam Savarino”, who is President and Chief Executive Officer of Savarino Construction Services Corp.

So far Savarino Construction has no plans to team up with Termini.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

Is Brand Name Wholesale Clothing Business Gives Less Profit?

By Peter Johnn

Planning to enter into wholesale brand name clothing business, but not sure of the profits? Don’t worry, read on and decide for yourself. For anyone entering the wholesale clothing business there are two chief options available, branded and non-branded wholesale clothing. The major difference between these two options is in the investment, non-branded clothes require less investment than branded apparels. Branded clothing costs more partly because of the advertisement costs. Non-branded clothes that are available at cheaper prices and don’t require publicity as they find a ready market for sale as they are relatively inexpensive. But, this does not mean that they are cheap and substandard. They are also of good quality but not as expensive as the branded ones. So, does that mean that dealing with branded apparels will not accrue more profits through the non-branded ones?

At the outset, one should be clear that both branded and non-branded clothing has its own advantages and disadvantages. Though branded clothing is expensive than non-branded ones they have their unique selling proposition. To start with, they are fashionable and most often created and designed by independent designers or designer houses that add an extra element of uniqueness to the garment. Another advantage of branded apparel is that it is well-known to people owing to the large scale advertising undertaken by manufacturers. So, they are mostly popular among people from various age-groups, who very often insist on buying a particular favorite brand. Apart from this, very often than not branded clothes are trendy and impart a different look and feel to the person wearing it. They enjoy an altogether different reputation from the buyers.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHfieQqTgwg[/youtube]

Dealing with branded wholesale clothing is advantageous in the long run, though it requires huge investments. But wholesale purchase has its own benefits that enable to earn a handsome profit margin. This is because branded clothing has no dearth of customers. Some people prefer buying only branded clothing as it is more durable and fashionable. Every other person has something branded in his/her wardrobe to wear at different types. This does not mean that non-branded wholesale clothing business is non profitable. In fact, there is varied and quality non-branded clothing available in the market. And due to their chief advantage of being relatively cheaper than branded clothing makes them attractive to buyers. Both branded and non-branded clothing is good and normally wholesale clothing businesses maintain an adequate stock of both types.

So, we can say that dealing with wholesale brand name clothing is not less profitable. Businessmen dealing with this should have the acute sense of maximizing profit over and above what is normally accrued to them. They can adopt different strategy such as purchasing wholesale stock during off season sales of branded companies and then selling it off with a higher profit margin. Since branded products are easily marketable and guarantee quality, people don’t think twice to pay for their favorite brands.

Another important consideration is that they need branded stuff from reputed and reliable suppliers. A right supplier will provide fashionable and trendy brand name clothing at minimum price. What is required is acumen to get designer wholesale branded clothing and provide it at the right time at a reasonable price.

Therefore, we can conclude that brand name wholesale clothing business definitely gives profits which can be at par if not more than the non-branded clothing. Each has its own distinct market and each finds its own customer base. What matters is the sharp acumen of the businessmen who needs to invest wisely and reap the benefits of the investment later on.

Microsoft to track legal marijuana with new partner Kind Financial

Sunday, June 19, 2016

Microsoft announced on Thursday they are partnering with KIND Financial to help governments track the production and distribution of legal marijuana. Kind Financial, a California-based start-up company, began selling its Agrisoft Seed to Sale software three years ago. Microsoft is admitting Kind’s software on the Government portion of its Azure cloud service.

Although Kind Financial CEO David Dinenberg stressed to The Guardian they “absolutely do not touch the plant”, his company does business with growers and distributors of marijuana, as well as the governments that regulate it. State law in twenty-five US states — but not US federal law — has legalized marijuana, whether medicinally or for recreational use. Kimberly Nelson, Microsoft executive director of state and local government solutions, said they expect significant demand for technology to help states make sure cannabis distribution within their state is done according to their laws.

Kind also provides kiosks similar to automated tellers (ATMs) to facilitate marijuana transactions in dispensaries. The distribution of marijuana is often done only with cash or through machines like the ones Kind offers since many banks in the United States shy away from the marijuana industry entirely. Microsoft is not interacting with this part of Kind’s operations, however.

Microsoft and Kind will apply for contracts with state governments for their software. Currently, they have applied to Puerto Rico, a US territory, where medical marijuana has recently been made legal. BioTrackTHC, a company similar to Kind Financial, already has contracts with Washington, New Mexico, and Illinois.

Dinenberg said his company’s partnership with Microsoft is a major step in advancing the legitimacy of cannabis-related businesses.

US Federal Reserve raises interest rate from 5% to 5.25%

Thursday, June 29, 2006

The United States Federal Reserve has announced an increase of 25 basis points (0.25%) in the federal funds rate bringing it to 5.25 percent. It also announced its approval of a 25 basis point increase in the discount rate to 6.25 percent.

The federal funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions such as banks lend balances they maintain at the Federal Reserve (called federal funds) to other banks overnight. The discount rate is the interest rate that an eligible bank is charged to borrow short term funds directly from the central bank through the discount window.

In its statement, the Fed said that growth is moderating from its quite strong pace earlier in the year, which it partly attributed to a cooling of the housing market and the delayed effect of increases in interest rates and energy prices. The Fed noted that inflation measures were “elevated” in recent months and that while productivity gains have held down increases in labor costs and inflation expectations “remain contained”. However, it pointed out that high levels of resource utilization and high energy and commodity prices have the potential to sustain inflation pressures.

In its outlook over its future moves, the Fed statement said “Although the moderation in the growth of aggregate demand should help to limit inflation pressures over time, the Committee judges that some inflation risks remain. The extent and timing of any additional firming that may be needed to address these risks will depend on the evolution of the outlook for both inflation and economic growth, as implied by incoming information.”

Talk To Your Clients Effectively And They Will Listen.

Talk to your Clients Effectively and they will listen.

by

sawraj sehgal

People talk to you everydaysometimes effectively, often times not. But when it comes to business, you cant afford to not have people listen. It you want your clients to really hear what you have to say, you have to know how to say it in the most effective manner possible. In any given situationbusiness or otherwisea persons main motivation is, Whats in it for me? That means whatever you say has to be geared towards answering that very question for your listener.

If youre ready to get your point across and be heard, read on to find out how to use a clients self-interest to your advantage and talk so they really listen. 1. Preparation A great sales pitch or presentation always starts long before the client arrives. No matter what youre selling, no ones going to buy it if you dont know your stuff. Preparation is key: you have to know what youre talking about if you want anyone to really listen. Of course, just what kind of preparation will depend on the nature of the material youre presenting, but remember that going the extra mile here will make clients take notice later. When preparing for any kind of meeting or presentation, take time in advance to go over all the material youre talking about. You should know the topic well, and have plenty of specifics to use for examples. It can also help to consider beforehand some of the questions that clients might ask. Anticipating their needs will help you be able to answer queries quickly and effectively. 2. Presentation Next, no matter what youre talking about, how you present it has everything to do with how well clients will listen. Anyone adequately prepared can talk for hoursbut part of your planning should be how best to present the given material. Decide before you begin just what kind of examples to use, or if there are any ways you can enhance your presentation with audio-visual material, pictures, or illustrations. For big presentations, youll want to practice in the mirror or for friends to make sure youre getting the key points across. To be more effective on a daily basis with all your clients, think of what you say as mini presentations. Start by examining your speech for little words like um and ah that weaken the effect of what youre trying to sayyoull be amazed at how much more attentively people listen. As well, take the time to make sure youre well presented: tidily dressed, on time, and polite. Remember that your presentation isnt just what you sayyoure a whole package, and how you present yourself needs to reflect that. 3. Passion Finally, the key to talking so clients listen is conveying to them your passion. If youre passionate about something, it comes through in the way you speak, in the way you hold your self, it even shows on your face. Theres no amount of preparation or presentation skill that can make up for a lack of passion for the topic or proposal at hand. The most effective speakers are the ones who combine all three in a way that makes people sit up and listen. The trick is to find your own personal balance and make your passion come through above all else. So what if youre not passionate about the material? Weve all done jobs we didnt like at one point or another, but you find a way to be enthusiastic and energetic about what youre doing by appreciating other sides of it. Getting passionate about something may only mean shifting your point of view. Always try to see things from the clients side, in order to understand just how what youre doing would benefit them. Theyll really hear what you have to say when you make it vital and important to themthats where your passion should lie. Remember always that a good talker is also a good listener, and take the time to listen carefully when your clients talk. Take care to keep the clients interests in mind and youre on your way to always talking in a way that makes people listen. Preparation, presentation and passionthree simple concepts that when used correctly can make you a great speaker. In private and public life these principles apply, and if you look closely at any of the successful people in your life, youre certain to find them in action. If you prepare in advance and take the time to present yourself and the material well, your passion will come through, and thats when people really listen.

BDSM as business: Interviews with Dominatrixes

Sunday, October 28, 2007

Whether the Civil War, World War II or the Iraq War, it can be challenging to face how conflict penetrates the psyche of a nation and surfaces in the nuances of life. There are thousands—if not millions—of individuals who indulge in fantasies others would deem perverse that have their nascence in some of the darkest moments of human history. It is possible someone you know pays a person to dress like a German Nazi to treat them like a “dirty Jew”, or to force them to pick cotton off the floor like a slave.

An S&M dungeon is a place where these individuals act out such taboos. Businesses that operate to meet their needs are often hidden, but they do exist and are typically legal. The clients want to remain confidential for fear of ostracism in their respective communities. As Sigmund Freud wrote, “Anyone who has violated a taboo becomes taboo himself because he possesses the dangerous quality of tempting others to follow his example.”

Last week Wikinews published the first in a two part series on the BDSM business: an interview with Bill & Rebecca, the owners of Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber. This week we publish the second part: an interview with three dungeon employees, Mistress Alex, Mistress Jada and Mistress Veronica. In their world, BDSM is a game, a harmless pursuit of roleplaying exercises that satiate the desires of the tabooed. These Dominatrixes are the kind of women men fantasize about, but they all look like they could be babysitting your children this Saturday night. Most likely, they will not be.

Mistress Alex has a distinctive sheen when David Shankbone walks into the room. Her moist skin cools quickly from the blow of the air conditioner she stands in front of. Just having finished an hour and a half session, she is dressed in a latex one-piece skirt and matching boots. Mistress Jada, a shapely Latina dressed in red, joins the conversation and remains throughout. When Alex needs to tend to a client, Mistress Veronica, who looks like she would be as comfortable teaching kindergarten as she would “tanning a man’s hide”, takes over for her.

The interview was neither sensational nor typical, but what you read may surprise, repulse, or even awaken feelings you never knew you had. Below is David Shankbone’s interview with three Dominatrixes.
