What is contemporary furniture?

There are a lot of contemporary furniture available today as well as loads of information form both off line and online resources. It seems that home owners are having abundant information to help them to effectively choose the ideal contemporary furniture.

But unfortunately, as there are some misunderstandings about what contemporary furniture means. Many people still think that contemporary furniture refers to the words “Modern Furniture”. This perception is actually true but just some part of it. The terms contemporary means to something that could be used in modern and old time fashion. Therefore if we talk about contemporary furniture, we usually talk about the furniture that can represents and be used with any kind of environment, no matter they are modern style or old fashion style. For example, if you have one table set that could be used in both modern and old fashion decoration, we generally called them contemporary furniture. So if you have this perception about them, so you may be have to change your attitude a little bit.

So how to decide which one is contemporary and which one does not?

To be straight forward and to be honest, I have to say that there is no clear definition to define which one is contemporary and which one is not. The only guideline is that you have to decide by using your own judgment which could base on your previous experience. If you can see the furniture set that also looks goon in modern environment as well as you can see its potential of place them in other decoration style, so you may be able to call them contemporary.

The reason why you should go for contemporary furniture.

The fact is in this changing world, technology and trends change very rapidly. Especially for the home owners who love to change furniture and decoration style very often. For this group of people, it is not possible for them to buy new furniture every time that they want to change the look of the house. So using contemporary furniture may be the best choice for them as they can be adjusted to place in all environment and decoration style. Moreover, you can save a lot of money from buying new furniture by only change the look and feel of the room just a little bit.

Particularly for the furniture that become out of fashion very easily such as sofa and dining table. These two furniture is the first priority that you should look for contemporary design, if you are the person who love to change decoration very often. The reason is that dining table and sofa are the expensive furniture, so if you choose contemporary before hand, you can save a lot of money on this.

Moreover, they are not only save you a lot of money but also in terms of flexibility that they can provide to your house. For example, if you have family members who love different kind of furniture style and decoration, using contemporary design is the good way to make sure that one decoration could fit to all everyone’s preference and you do not have to make any major modifications.

Genetically altered mice are “superathletes”

Friday, November 2, 2007

Researchers at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio have announced the creation of transgenic mice with substantially improved athletic endurance, which live and breed longer and are more aggressive than genetically unmodified siblings, and are leaner despite consuming 60% more food. The mice have been dubbed “mighty mice” or “supermice” by the popular press and have been compared to cyclist Lance Armstrong.

The changes were created by adding an extra copy of a single gene, PEPCK-C. This gene is already present in the mouse genome, but the modified gene is designed to be strongly active (transcribed) in skeletal muscle. (The natural copy of the gene, most active in the liver, continues to function normally). The gene mediates a crucial rate controlling step of gluconeogenesis and glyceroneogenesis, and its activity helps to allow energy production by the mitochondrial citric acid cycle. In the transgenics, more energy is available to muscle through the burning of fatty acids, with much less production of lactate (a chemical that leads to sore muscles when one exercises). This is not as major a change to the mouse genome as it might seem to the layperson. The PEPCK-C gene is already present in the mouse and a variety of natural mutations could likely cause similar results. The study appears today in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in a paper with lead author Parvin Hakimi from the laboratory of Richard W. Hanson.

The altered mice can run at 20 meters per minute (0.75 miles per hour or 1.2 kilometers per hour) for up to six kilometers (nearly four miles) without stopping. The average treadmill time for strenuous exercise on a 25-degree incline is 31.9 minutes, well in excess of the 19 minute average of unmodified mice. Females can breed at two and a half years of age, whereas most female mice cannot breed after the first year.

A colony of 500 mice has been bred, starting from six independent germline transformations (“founder” mice). The level of PEPCK-C in muscle is 9 units per gram of muscle as opposed to only 0.08 in normal mice. Levels of triglycerides and the number of mitochondria are also increased.

Hanson said that he did not expect that the results would be applicable to humans due to both practical and ethical considerations in addition to the fact that the genes might not function the same way in humans.

This is not the first time that the press has dubbed a genetically modified mouse a “mighty mouse”. Earlier scientists at John Hopkins University announced that they had made mice with massively increased muscle mass that were larger and stronger than their normal cousins. These alterations increased strength rather than endurance through the genetic modification of myostatin and follistatin, or by injection of a soluble form of ACVR2B to block myostatin activity in normal mice.

US salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter, brand recalls product

Sunday, January 11, 2009

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an outbreak of salmonella that has affected at least 399 people in 42 different U.S. states has been linked to King Nut, an American brand of peanut butter. In Minnesota, the state’s Health Department announced that bacteria tests for the disease on a tub of creamy King Nut peanut butter had tested positive for the disease, initiating a recall by its distributor in Solon, King Nut Companies.

Workers found evidence from these tests that the brand caused the outbreak. This has not been completely proven, however, as the Food and Drug Administration and King Nut itself are still conducting tests to discover if the case is isolated or related to the nationwide incident.

According to a statement made by the Health Department, the brand is used in many places including schools, hospitals, some restaurants and retirement homes, 20 alone being in Minnesota. A tub of peanut butter used inside of a retirement home where many of its citizens had become sick was tested positive by Minnesota’s health department.

We are very sorry this happened. We are taking immediate and voluntary action because the health and safety of those who use our products is always our highest priority.

Yesterday, King Nut Companies recalled all peanut butter distributed by their company. The president of King Nut Companies, Martin Kanan, said in a statement yesterday, “We are very sorry this happened. We are taking immediate and voluntary action because the health and safety of those who use our products is always our highest priority.”

In a web statement, King Nut told all of its customers to “put on hold all of their peanut butter in question. A recall of this product will be announced Monday morning. At this point it is unclear what Peanut Corporation of America will do with regard to this case or the national case of the salmonella outbreak.” The Peanut Corporation of America, located in Lynchburg but also operating in the states of Texas and Georgia, is the manufacturer for King Nut.

Salmonellosis is an infection of salmonella bacteria that usually results in diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms are normally developed 12 to 72 hours after a person is infected, and can last anywhere from 3 to 7 days. Most of the time, the infected person will recover from the disease, but younger and older people have higher risks of it developing and becoming serious. Rarely, salmonella can cause hospitalization, and very rarely, it can lead to death.

Can Bbq’s Be Deemed Healthy}

Submitted by: Paula Gerie

Healthy eating and weight loss is a hot topic dominating our time; everything we do and everywhere we go has now become affected by how healthy it is. When the summer months spring upon, it is important that we are all looking and feeling the part. The entire year has now become dedicated to achieving that ideal summer body we all crave. But how do we continue with this regime we have devoted ourselves to once summer has dawned upon us? All of those food drenched BBQs hosted by the family and days out dining with friends will surely put a spanner in the works, wont it? Possibly not!

BBQs such as the Weber Genesis e330 or a Weber Spirit Premium S320 which can be purchased from Weber accessories online, can actually offer the ideal opportunity for us to eat healthier (believe it or not!). Not only is it guaranteed to taste great, but food can be whipped up in a matter of minutes; in fact, the chances are it will probably take longer to flare the BBQ up!

Summer is the perfect time to pull out that mean grilling machines and get the family and friends over for a good old knees up! Unsurprisingly we say BBQ and immediately thoughts are damaging; Sausages, wings, burgers, calories and fats?! Worry not, your thoughts got completely carried away and forgot about the amazing chicken breasts, fish fillets, fresh vegetables and fruit! Yes, thats right, we said fruit! All of these, when cooked will not fail to tickle your taste buds! Even BBQs have the potential to deliver healthy and nutritious meals without an ounce of guilt flying your way. If you deem anything from kebabs (chicken and vegetable), to marinated chicken and fish, asparagus and potatoes unhealthy, you are not entirely normal and probably cannot be helped. We joke of course! On a serious note, these are all types of foods that can be cooked on the BBQ in no time at all and will not threaten your health in the slightest. Dont forget you can buy your own sides such as low fat potato salads and coleslaw to accompany main meals as well making a green, leafy salad complete with a delicious dressing.

And now you are no doubt thinking Well, what about dessert?! You lot arent easily pleased are you?! Well you cannot go wrong with a fruit salad on a blistering hot summers day! Slice and dice some fine, fresh fruit, anything you fancy and finish the dish with a cool and creamy, low fat yoghurt. Simple! Alternatively, whilst the BBQ is cooling down, fruits can be wrapped up in foil, placed on the grill for several minutes and left to cook. As the fruit cooks, juices will begin to flow, leaving you with a warm, sticky fruit salad which can be topped with a dash of syrup for extra flavouring.

Experimenting with your BBQ is the way forward; cooking can be fun and exciting as well as healthy. Never let the prospect of a stereotypical BBQ get the better of you, there are always alternatives! Low fat, flavoursome and nutritious foods pave the way for a great BBQ. Try to avoid BBQ sauces when cooking healthy meals and stick to herbs and spices to marinade your meats; these will leave chicken tasting tender and full of flavour. It is a common fact that grilling is an ideal way of cooking that reduces fat; cooking lean meats with little marinade and serving with vegetables will lend you the perfect, healthy BBQ.

IBM releases freeware for visualizing document histories

Sunday, March 27, 2005

Cambridge, Massachusetts —

IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center in Cambridge released a free tool March 25 for visualizing the changing history of a document or directory of documents, called history flow. The tool offers a variety of views of document histories, including a view that gives each revision equal importance, and a timeline view which displays each revision proportionally to how long it remained current. Each different editor who makes changes to the article has a distinct color, allowing for that editor’s text to be tracked over time.

The tool was first developed in 2003 by a collaboration between Fernanda B. Viégas of the MIT Media Lab and Martin Wattenberg and Kushal Dave of IBM. It was initially tested out on a large subset of the pages of Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia project which preserves every change made to each of its articles. The resulting paper was drafted in the winter of 2003 and presented at a conference in April 2004; it remains the most comprehensive overview of the lifecycle of articles in an active wiki community. A year later, the history flow paper is still the most frequently cited source of statistics about the reversion of vandalism on Wikipedia.

The current tool is maintained by Martin Wattenberg and Jonathan Feinberg at IBM. It allows users to download the text and histories of the contents of any MoinMoin wiki, or to view the history of the contents of an entire directory of documents. The tool is free to download and use, but its code is not open source. The support for MoinMoin wikis comes via a plugin, so the tool may be extensible to the native interfaces of other wiki engines in the future.

5 Tips For Finding Great Australian Car Loans}

5 Tips for Finding Great Australian Car Loans

by

Chris RobertsonShopping for a vehicle can be both exhilarating and anxiety-provoking. Whether you’re in the market for a new or used car, the prospect of driving it off the lot and owning it is incredibly exciting. Still, buying a vehicle is accompanied by so many unknowns…. Am I getting a good deal? Will owning the car be hassle free, or will I experience the headaches of taking it in time and again for repair? And, most of all, where can I find low-cost car loans?

After all, next to buying a house, buying a vehicle is the biggest single expenditure you’ll ever make. And, if you’re like most people, you don’t have the money to pay cash for your vehicle. Car financing is a godsend, but if you aren’t careful, in the long run you could end up owing more than your car is worth. How do you find a car loan that will enable you to buy the car of your dreams without getting into financial hot water? Here are five tips to consider:

1. Find financing before you buy.

All too often, people go car shopping without enough information about car finance and car loan interest rates. It’s in your best interest to find a financing package that will work for you before you take a test drive. That way, you’ll know exactly what you can afford and won’t make an impulsive decision that you may live to regret.

2. Understand your options.

When it comes to car loans, one size doesn’t fit all. Your unique financial circumstances and your choice of vehicles determine which car loan is best for you. For example, car loan interest rates may be the most important factor for one person to consider, while another might be more concerned with the length of time that the loan approval process will take.

3. Use a car loan calculator.

Available online, a car loan calculator will give you a quick snapshot of what your potential payments are for different loan amounts and varying terms. Take advantage of these online services, which will typically allow you to enter the amount of the loan, interest rate you’d like, the term of the loan, and the final balloon payment you’re willing to make. In a few seconds, you’ll be able to see what your monthly payment will be.

4. Consider what will be covered.

When you are looking at car loans, consider whether or not you will need more than the purchase price of the vehicle. For example, some companies allow you to finance on-road costs and taxes, car insurance, extended warranties, and loan protection.

5. Get quick quotes from an online source.

An established company with a Web presence has access to many different financing companies, and is most likely to provide you with the loan terms you need and a speedy approval process. For example, you may need a delayed first payment, interest only payments, or extended finance terms. In the case of a used vehicle, they can also help ensure that the title is clear and that there are no outstanding loans from the prior owner.

The process of finding good car loans doesn’t need to be a hassle. Indeed, when you work with the right company, you can soon own the car of your dreams.Chris Robertson
