Australian House of Representatives acknowledges Cyclone Larry efforts

Wednesday, March 29, 2006The Australian House of Representatives today acknowledged the impact of the recent devastating Cyclone Larry and the efforts of the support given to the residents and communities of north Queensland in order to restore normal life.

Phillip Ruddock (Liberal, Berowra) moved a motion expressing this after Question Time today, which included a description of the devastation wrought on the area, the response by the Australian Government and the Australian Defence Force, and thanked the efforts of people for their “willingness to roll up their sleeves and get on with the job of cleaning up and rebuilding their towns and centres.”

The Leader of the Opposition, Kim Beazley (Labor, Brand) supported the motion, and congratulated the move to put General Peter Cosgrove in charge of operations, stating that soldiers “know how to work through logistics issues…how to work around officialdom or blockages”, praised both local federal and state members of Parliament, and especially the Labor Queensland state premier, Peter Beattie.

Bob Katter (Independent, Kennedy) was more critical in his speech. Katter thanked Beattie for his immediate response, but also described his confrontation with him and said how first responses were “simply not working”, but also praised Beattie’s decision on Cosgrove. Katter also described how the incident was “the worst natural disaster inAustralian history” and how the banana industry in north Queensland was decimated. Katter went on to describe the financial problems of the people in the region, the “huge gap” between the cost of rebuilding and insurance payouts, also asking “Are we going to pay people virtually nothing to sit on their backsides to do nothing or are we going to pay them a decent wage and have them rebuilding our communities for us?”

The debate is set to continue in the Main Committee, as an opportunity for many more members of the House of Representatives to speak to the motion, without taking up further time in the Chamber.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Saturday, March 4, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council requested on Tuesday that a picture be found on what many thought was the site of a previous hotel.

The Proposed Elmwood Village Hotel would be placed on the intersection of Elmwood and Forest. It was suspected by residents and business owners in the area that hotel once stood in the same spot.

The Elmwood Village hotel is a proposed development by Savarino Construction Services Corp. In order for the project to proceed, at least five buildings (1119-1121 Elmwood) would need to be demolished. All five houses are currently occupied by businesses and residents.

After some research, a freelance journalist writing for Wikinews was able to determine that there was never a hotel on the proposed Elmwood Village Hotel site. However; there was a temporary hotel located on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest.

Buffalo was the host of the Pan-American Exposition from May 1 until November 2, 1901. It was a fair designed to feature the latest in technology, including electricity. There was a midway, athletic events, and had African, Eskimo, and Mexican villages. However; what is likely the most famous event that took place at the exposition was the assassination of then President William McKinley on September 6, 1901. He was shot by Leon Czolgosz just outside the Temple of Music and died eight days later while in the home of John Milburn on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Just a short time later, Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated on September 14, 1901 at the Wilcox House on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Nearly eight million people attended the exposition.

During that time several hotels and rooming houses were built around the exposition including The Elmwood at 717 Elmwood, the Hotel Elmhurst at Forest and Lincoln Parkway, Hotel Gibbs 1005-1021 Elmwood, the R. Palmerton Merritt at 441 Forest and The Norman at 422 Forest. None of these hotels or rooming houses exist today.

Probably the most famous hotel that was built during the exposition was the Statler’s Pan-American Hotel built by Ellsworth Milton Statler A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained the only known reproduction photo of the hotel [pictured at the top]. The hotel stood on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, had 2,100 sleeping rooms and accommodations for 5,000. At the time, the Statler was the largest hotel [based on the number of rooms] ever constructed. It was also the largest temporary hotel. It was three stories high, plastered on the inside, made mostly of wood and was covered with ornamental staff on the outside, which made it semi-fireproof. Every room was an outside room and was well lighted and ventilated. It was located within one block of the exposition’s main entrance.

The Statler was built for only one thing, the exposition. Work began in 1900 and finished just before the beginning of the exposition. When the exposition ended in November, the hotel was taken down.

Maps from 1894 show that there was no hotel, let alone any buildings or houses on the intersection. However; research did show that the homes 1119-1121 Elmwood, the buildings that would be demolished to build the Elmwood Village Hotel, were built sometime before 1915 but were not on the intersection prior to 1902.

Based on research conducted at the Buffalo Historical Society, it was concluded that between the years of 1890 and 1902, no other major hotel existed in the area. In fact, research had shown that almost every hotel built in the area, existed only during the time of the exposition.

Research also indicated a hotel or a rooming house at 1089 Elmwood around 1901-1903. The only known name of the hotel was the John C. Hill Hotel. The hotel was in the house now called the Atwater House. The house was the first house to be built on the east side of the block.

The Atwater House is currently vacant and owner Pano Georgiadis wants to demolish it to expand his restaurant. The house was built by 1894 and the original owner and builder of the house is currently unknown. Its earliest known occupant was Edward Atwater who in 1862 founded the oil refinery company of Atwater & Hawes in Buffalo. The site of this company was recently uncovered in the Canal District during an archeological dig.

At the moment, current research does not show any connection between the two men.

The exposition was a commercial failure and what profit Statler did make on the hotel, went to build another temporary hotel for the 1904 St. Louis Exhibition. That hotel was successful and the profit made from it was used to build the first permanent Statler Hotel at 107 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. The hotel is no longer in operation, but small offices are currently operating in parts of the building.

UK petrol prices rise to five-month high

Tuesday, March 28, 2006Petrol prices across the UK rose to an average of 91.1p per litre (U.S. $6.02 per U.S. gallon) of premium unleaded on Tuesday, which is the highest they have been for five months. Prices have been rising ever since December 2005, when they reached a trough in the current cycle of 87.6p a litre ($5.79/gal.), and have gained about 1.5p a litre (2.6 cents) in the last 10 days.

Across the UK, petrol prices ranged from 86.9p to 100.9p ($5.74 to $6.67) for unleaded and 89.9p to 105.9p ($5.94 to $7.00) for diesel.

These figures coincide with the results of a motorists survey from AA Personal Loans, which showed that most drivers are ignorant of petrol prices. Just 14% of those surveyed were able to correctly give the current price of petrol. Out of 1700 people surveyed, the lowest estimate was 69p a litre ($4.56/gal.) and the highest was £3 a litre ($19.83/gal.).

Canadian National buys Chicago railroad

Monday, February 2, 2009

Canadian National (CN), the Montreal-based rail operator, has bought the main lines of the U.S. Elgin (EJ&E).

CN began to buy the railway from U.S. Steel in September 2007. Regulatory approval in the US was given in January. The Canadian railway company will use the lines to avoid congestion in Chicago, taking freight along a 300km loop through the American Midwest. The route will begin the new operations on March 4.

U.S. Steel will keep the facilities and staff required to keep the Gary steelworks in Indiana rail connected, renaming the resulting operations to the Gary Railway. The rest of the EJ&E will be integrated into CN’s existing networks. The railway passes through suburban areas of Chicago, causing residents to fear the noise and traffic that greater intensity of operation could bring.

The Surface Transportation Board (STB), the US rail regulator, has required CN to make upgrades to ease local concerns but opponents have vowed to continue to fight against the changes. The Chicago Tribune speculates that CN will switch trains from the former Wisconsin Central line to the EJ&E south of Mundelein. This would reduce traffic in suburbs north of the crossover from 19 trains a day to just two; whilst south of the junction trains would increase from five a day to 20.

CN paid $300 million for the lines, and will pay $100 million to upgrade them and $60 million to make the STB’s required improvements.

What You Should Do On A First Date

By Terence Young

You’ve just met someone you find infinitely interesting. What should you do to get to know them? Choosing an activity for a first date is an important decision. Hopefully, you will have things in common with this person, especially if you are looking for that special one you can spend the rest of your life with. Movies and dinners are classic choices, but sometimes they aren’t the best choice.

For instance, if you and the other person are both interested in spiritual matters, there is nothing wrong with attending a religious service together for a first date. If these matters are dear to both your hearts, it will be a welcome relief from the sometimes stressful situation of just taking in entertainment or trying to make conversation.

Of course, that first conversation will need to take place somewhere. Ask your date about themselves to choose a really hand-picked place. For instance, if you share hiking or other outdoor activities, they might enjoy a picnic in a state park followed by a short hike, rather than the traditional dinner date. Being outdoors is relaxed and refreshing. Take a look at the faces of people walking or riding bicycles. They are almost always smiling.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWea1EIVzb4[/youtube]

Likewise, find out if the potential date drinks alcohol or not before choosing a night club. In case they don’t and you do, or vice versa, you might want to seriously consider whether you want to date this person at all. Is it an important issue to you? If so, you’ll probably want to choose someone who shares your views.

While on that first date, you should make it your utmost concern to make that other person comfortable. If you sense that they are unhappy with the atmosphere, suggest some place else to go. If you chose a comedy club, for instance, and they don’t seem to be laughing at the jokes, it might be because the jokes are demeaning to women or your date is picking up on something else undesirable. Watch him or her for signs of discomfort and work to relieve the situation.

Dinner dates are always appropriate, but sometimes the conversation lags. If you will be visiting over dinner, think ahead about topics you’d like to discuss with your date. What specific things would you like to know about them? Ask, but don’t be nosy if they seem to prefer to be private about some things.

A nice way to break the ice on a first date is to double date with another couple. If there are two other people with you, the conversation is much less likely to lag, and everyone will probably be more comfortable. Choose friends who have a stable relationship, and who like to interact with others. Don’t choose friends who monopolize the conversation or who tend to fight with each other, though.

Hopefully, that date will turn out to be a really fun, interesting time of getting to know a really special, fun person. Just remember to treat them like you would want to be treated and find common ground for your relationship.

Woman killed in shark attack at Amity Point, Australia

Sunday, January 8, 2006Original Reporting

A woman in Australia has been killed in a shark attack. The attack occurred at 5pm (Local Time) just off Amity Point, North Stradbroke Island, south-east of Brisbane.

The woman, described as 21, had lost both arms up to the elbow and sustained severe wounds to her torso and legs. She was carried to shore by friends and was then flown by rescue helicopter to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. Surgeons were unable to save her.

The woman was holidaying from Brisbane with a church camp and attempts to contact her family have been made.

Emergency Services Rescue Helicopter crew officer Rod Morgan said the woman had suffered massive blood loss.

“She was very pale” he said, “We were diverted right away and were able to be on the scene within minutes and were able to have the patient at hospital within an hour of the attack.”

“She had life threatening injuries she had lost significant amounts of blood and the patient had what we would call an altered level of consciousness where it wasn’t able to communicate directly with the patient” said Queensland Ambulance paramedic Lachlan Parker.

There were many witnesses at the scene and they are now being interviewed by Police at Amity Point. They are described as being distraught.

One witness, who asks to not be identified, described that the victim was swimming in the sea with her Border Collie. When the attack happened, the dog ran home to raise the alarm.

“I was across the road from where she was staying and I saw the dog come flying up the road all wet and shivering and whimpering,” she said, “Then a little boy came running up and said the girl had lost her leg and her arm and everyone ran out of the house towards the beach. It was just a little black-and-white dog but he was crazy so I locked him under the house.”

Other reports claim that the woman had been scuba diving in murky shallow water approximately 15 metres from the shore.

The woman is believed to be from McDowall in Brisbane, but her name has not yet been released.

A resident of Amity Point for 20 years, Brad Ross, said tourists visiting the area have been warned of potential attacks; “The shore just falls away into 30m of water and there are plenty of bull sharks out there. People know when they enter the water there they’re stepping into a shark habitat.”

Other beaches on the island are protected by drum lines.

Queensland state police inspector Peter Harding believes from the severity of the woman’s injuries that she was attacked by a group of bull sharks, a species known for aggressive behavior this time of year. Water police will search for the sharks today and as a result, beaches on the east and west of Amity Point have been closed.

This is the first attack in the area since August 1972.

Local wisdom cautions against allowing dogs in the water at swimming beaches, because of a fear that they attract sharks, perhaps because of residue accumulated from fleas which live on the dog’s blood.

What Are Varicose Veins And How To Combat Them Naturally With Vitamins

By Darrell Miller

Varicose veins are veins that are abnormally enlarged, bulging, bluish, and lumpy-looking. These veins are often associated with dull, nagging aches and pains. Varicose veins are the result of malfunctioning valves inside the veins. When blood pulses through the arteries to provide nutrients and oxygen to the body tissues, it returns to the heart by means of the veins. The blood moves through the arteries by the beating of the heart. Similar to the arteries, the veins are tube-shaped vessels in graduated sizes. However, unlike the arteries, the veins have tiny valves on the inner walls to prevent the blood from flowing backward, toward the arteries. If the valves on the inner walls do not work properly, circulation is impaired and blood accumulates in the veins, causing them to stretch. Swelling, restlessness, leg sores, itching, leg cramps, and a feeling of heaviness in the legs are characteristic of varicose veins.

Since poor circulation contributes to the formation of varicose veins, they are most commonly found in those individuals who sit or stand in one position for an extended amount of time. Additionally, those people who habitually sit with their legs crossed, and those who lack proper regular exercise are more susceptible to varicose veins. Excess weight, heavy lifting, and pregnancy also put increased pressure on the legs, causing the likelihood of developing varicose veins to increase. Constipation, heart failure, liver disease, and abdominal tumors can also play a key role in the formation of varicose veins.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VogSZcC0q_M[/youtube]

A deficiency of vitamin C and bioflavonoids has been shown to weaken the collagen structure in the vein walls, causing the potential for varicose veins. Additionally, it has been shown that a tendency for varicose veins may run in families, so there is evidence that it is genetic. Some experts even believe that hormone replacement therapy and birth control pills can contribute to the formation of varicose veins. Approximately fifty percent of all middle-aged Americans have at least some form of varicosities, with more women than men being affected.

The majorities of cases of varicose veins do not cause any serious problems and can be managed with simple home measures. However, in some cases where varicose veins are not treated properly, complications such as bleeding under the skin, deep vein blood clots, an eczema-like condition near the affected veins, or ulcerated spots near the ankles may occur. Other possible complications that can arise are phlebitis, thrombophlebitis, postthrombotic syndrome, hemorrhage from a ruptured vein, or a pulmonary embolism.

The following nutrients have been determined to be very important for dealing with varicose veins: coenzyme Q10, DMG, essential fatty acids, glutathione, Pycnogenol, vitamin C plus bioflavonoids, and vitamin E. Additionally, the following nutrients have been determined to be helpful in dealing with varicose veins: Brewers yeast, lecithin granules, a multivitamin and mineral complex, vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin D3 along with calcium and magnesium, and zinc plus copper. Also, the following herbs are helpful in dealing with and treating varicose veins: aloe vera gel, bilberry, bromelain, butchers broom, ginkgo biloba, gotu kola, hawthorn berries, cayenne, dandelion, horse chestnut, magnolia liliflora, scutellaria, trichosanth, wild angelica, and white oak bark.

Look to your local or internet vitamin store for vitamins, herbs, and herbal formulas to support healthy circulation and prevent varicose veins. Always choose name brands to ensure quality of what you buy for better health.

2008 AutoTronics Taipei: Participants from IT industry to participate COMPUTEX uncertainly

Friday, April 11, 2008

Since the AutoTronics Taipei was held from 2006, companies from electronic and automobile-related industries steadily made their stages and a good complementary in this trade show.

Before the first holding in 2006, because of the establishment of Car Electronics Pavilion in 2005 TAITRONICS Autumn (Taipei International Electronic Autumn Show), it (the pavilion) ever became a hot topic in these 2 industries. And eventually, Yulon Group recruited their sub-companies grouping their own pavilion to showcase automobile parts, accessories, and applications.

Currently, automobile navigation, mobile entertainment, and road safety, were included in modern automotive devices. But in a keynote speech of TARC Pavilion, Jamie Hsu (Consultant of Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Republic of the China) pointed out several threats and opportunities on the automotive industry, his words also echoed a notable quote by Yi-cheng Liu (Chairman of Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association): “The automobile industry shouldn’t be monopolized by a company or its own industry. If this industry want to be grown up, it [the industry] should do more optimizations and transformations with the other related industries like IT and electronic.”

Although some participants like Renesas, Fujitsu, MiTAC, TomTom NV, and Agilent ever participated in Taipei IT Month, CeBIT, or Computex Taipei, but there were varied comments for participation on Computex 2008.

Computex 2008 will do a significant growth, of course. But we [Aglient] still consider to cooperate with Intel in a forum rather than showcasing in Computex.
We [the MiTAC Group] will appoint different sub-companies to participate in different trade shows by different industries. That’s why we showcase the same products in different shows by different sub-companies.

Renesas Technology, a participant of Computex 2007, won’t showcase in Computex 2008, but Fujitsu and TomTom both declared to participate in the 2008 Taipei IT Month.

Generally in the automobile industry, progressively conformed by the other industries, its success should depend on collaborations between different and similar industries because “not any company can do any monopoly in any industry” even though the automobile industry will become a “trillion industry” not only in Taiwan.
