Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Monday, December 3, 2007

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

Asbestos controversy aboard Scientology ship Freewinds

Friday, May 16, 2008

Controversy has arisen over the reported presence of blue asbestos on the MV Freewinds, a cruise ship owned by the Church of Scientology. According to the Saint Martin newspaper The Daily Herald and the shipping news journal Lloyd’s List, the Freewinds was sealed in April and local public health officials on the Caribbean island of Curaçao where the ship is docked began an investigation into the presence of asbestos dust on the ship. Former Scientologist Lawrence Woodcraft supervised work on the ship in 1987, and attested to the presence of blue asbestos on the Freewinds in an affidavit posted to the Internet in 2001. Woodcraft, a licensed architect by profession, gave a statement to Wikinews and commented on the recent events.

According to The Daily Herald, the Freewinds was in the process of being renovated by the Curaçao Drydock Company. The article states that samples taken from paneling in the ship were sent to the Netherlands, where an analysis revealed that they “contained significant levels of blue asbestos”. An employee of the Curaçao Drydock Company told Radar Online in an April 30 article that the Freewinds has been docked and sealed, and confirmed that an article about asbestos ran in the local paper.

Lloyd’s List reported that work on the interior of the Freewinds was suspended on April 27 after health inspectors found traces of blue asbestos on the ship. According to Lloyd’s List, Frank Esser, Curaçao Drydock Company’s interim director, joined Curaçao’s head of the department of labor affairs Christiene van der Biezen along with the head of the local health department Tico Ras and two inspectors in an April 25 inspection of the ship. “We are sending someone so that they can tell us what happened, where it came from, since when it has been there,” said Panama Maritime Authority’s director of merchant marine Alfonso Castillero in a statement to Lloyd’s List.

The Church of Scientology purchased the ship, then known as the Bohème, in 1987, through an organization called Flag Ship Trust. After being renovated and refitted, it was put into service in June 1988. The ship is used by the Church of Scientology for advanced Scientology training in “Operating Thetan” levels, as well as for spiritual retreats for its members. Curaçao has been the ship’s homeport since it was purchased by the Church of Scientology.

According to his 2001 statement, Lawrence Woodcraft had been an architect in London, England since 1975, and joined Scientology’s elite “Sea Organization” (Sea Org) in 1986. He wrote that he was asked by the Sea Org to work on the Freewinds in 1987, and during his work on the ship “noticed a powdery blue fibrous substance approximately 1 ½” thick between the paint and the steel wall,” which he believed to be asbestos. He also discovered what he thought was blue asbestos in other parts of the ship, and reported his findings to Church of Scientology executives. Woodcraft discussed his experiences in a 2001 interview published online by the Lisa McPherson Trust, a now-defunct organization which was critical of the Church of Scientology.

The Freewinds regularly inspects the air quality on board and always meets or exceeds US standards.

Church of Scientology spokeswoman Karin Pouw responded to Radar Online about the asbestos reports, in an email published in an article in Radar on May 1. “The Freewinds regularly inspects the air quality on board and always meets or exceeds US standards,” said Pouw. She stated that two inspections performed in April “confirmed that the air quality is safe,” and asserted that the inspections revealed the Freewinds satisfies standards set by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Clean Air Act.

Pouw told Radar that “The Freewinds will be completing its refit on schedule.” The Church of Scientology-affiliated organization Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) had been planning a cruise aboard the Freewinds scheduled for May 8, but according to Radar an individual who called the booking number for the cruise received a message that the cruise had been delayed due to ongoing work on the ship. Citing an article in the Netherlands Antilles newspaper Amigoe, Radar reported on May 6 that a team from the United States and supervised by an independent bureau from the Netherlands traveled to Curaçao in order to remove asbestos from the Freewinds.

…if the Church of Scientology claims to have removed the blue asbestos, I just don’t see how, it’s everywhere. You would first have to remove all the pipes, plumbing, a/c ducts, electrical wiring etc. etc. just a maze of stuff.

“I stand by everything I wrote in my 2001 affidavit,” said Lawrence Woodcraft in an exclusive statement given to Wikinews. Woodcraft went on to state: “I would also comment that if the Church of Scientology claims to have removed the blue asbestos, I just don’t see how, it’s everywhere. You would first have to remove all the pipes, plumbing, a/c ducts, electrical wiring etc. etc. just a maze of stuff. Also panelling as well, basically strip the ship back to a steel hull. Also blue asbestos is sprayed onto the outer walls and then covered in paint. It’s in every nook and cranny.”

Many Scientologist celebrities have spent time aboard the Freewinds, including Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, John Travolta, Kelly Preston, Chick Corea, Lisa Marie Presley, Catherine Bell, Kate Ceberano, and Juliette Lewis. Now magazine reported that Tom Cruise has been urged to seek medical attention regarding potential asbestos exposure, however a representative for Cruise stated he has “absolutely no knowledge” of the recent asbestos controversy. Cruise, Holmes, Travolta and Preston have celebrated birthdays and other events on the Freewinds.

There is not now and never has been a situation of asbestos exposure on the Freewinds.

In a May 15 statement to the United Kingdom daily newspaper Metro, a representative for the Church of Scientology said that “There is not now and never has been a situation of asbestos exposure on the Freewinds.” The Asbestos and Mesothelioma Center notes that agencies have recommended anyone who has spent time on the Freewinds consult with their physician to determine if possible asbestos exposure may have affected their health.

Raw blue asbestos is the most hazardous form of asbestos, and has been banned in the United Kingdom since 1970. Blue asbestos fibers are very narrow and thus easily inhaled, and are a major cause of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which can develop in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, the lining of the abdominal cavity, or the pericardium sac surrounding the heart. The cancer is incurable, and can manifest over 40 years after the initial exposure to asbestos.

“This is the most dangerous type of asbestos because the fibres are smaller than the white asbestos and can penetrate the lung more easily,” said toxicologist Dr. Chris Coggins in a statement published in OK! Magazine. Dr. Coggins went on to note that “Once diagnosed with mesothelioma, the victim has six months to a year to live. It gradually reduces lung function until the victim is no longer able to breathe and dies.”

Wikinews interviews Joe Schriner, Independent U.S. presidential candidate

Saturday, April 17, 2010

Journalist, counselor, painter, and US 2012 Presidential candidate Joe Schriner of Cleveland, Ohio took some time to discuss his campaign with Wikinews in an interview.

Schriner previously ran for president in 2000, 2004, and 2008, but failed to gain much traction in the races. He announced his candidacy for the 2012 race immediately following the 2008 election. Schriner refers to himself as the “Average Joe” candidate, and advocates a pro-life and pro-environmentalist platform. He has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles, and has published public policy papers exploring solutions to American issues.

Wikinews reporter William Saturn? talks with Schriner and discusses his campaign.

Accidental email brings product placement agency under fire

Sunday, September 21, 2008

An email accidentally sent to Jeff Crouse of the Anti-Advertising Agency recently brought the controversial techniques of the advertising firm Kluger Agency under fire.

“I’m writing because we feel you may be a good company to participate in a brand integration campaign within the actual lyrics of one of the worlds most famous recording artists upcoming song/album,” the email read, offering to place Jeff Crouse‘s fake brand, Double Happiness Jeans, into the songs of popular artists. It was posted on his blog along with a reply that mocked Kluger and brought ridicule and criticism against Adam Kugler and his agency. According to Crouse, Kluger emailed him once again to claim it had been an automated email, and later requested that Crouse remove the post and comments criticizing himself and his agency, threatening a $150,000 lawsuit against Crouse for defamation.

Kluger Agency is known for advertising brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Mercedes-Benz, and Nike by inserting the brand names in the songs of popular artists like Mariah Carey, Black Eyed Peas, Fall Out Boy, Pink, Lady GaGa and Ludacris. Kluger, founded in 2006, represents over 170 corporations and focuses on well-known record labels.

Kluger and his PR team have come forward defending the advertising techniques, stating that they do not have songs made just for the products in question and do not infringe on artistic integrity. “Now, we don’t want an artist to write a song specifically to promote a brand, we just feel that if it’s a product that’s admired by the artist and fits his/her image, we now have the capability of leveling out the playing field and making things financially beneficial for all parties involved,” he was quoted saying to Wired.

However, the agency’s website shows video examples of its product placement, with brand images and names often being repeated, pointed at, praised, or being the basis of the song. The website also advertises that “a successful ‘brand-dropping’ campaign will imprint [the] brand name and product into your market’s subconscious”.

Garage Door Repair Tips}

Submitted by: Floyd Levinsky

Is your garage door opener not working as well as it used to? Does the door stick sometimes? Or has your garage door opener stopped working completly?

If you do not have the time or money to discover a repair company in your neighborhood, then maybe you can try to fix your opener yourself.

Fixing your opener could also be simple. You may just want a couple of parts. Simply visit the nearest big box store and ask an associate for help.

If you happen to be lucky and find a knowledgeable affiliate he will then enable you to pick all of the parts that you simply want for your Garage Door Opener Repair while saving you probably the most money possible.

Next, check out the internet for some tutorials or videos that can help show you step by step ways how to make sure that your repair goes as smoothly as possible.

If you are not as advanced at completing different kinds of repairs, there are other things you can do to attempt to fix your opener.

When attempting to fix anything, the method is to start with the easiest things to fix first, then move on to the more difficult.

An alternate to the start with the easiest thing first is to start with the part that’s most likely causing the problem.

First you can attempt to replace the remote batteries and see if this improves anything with your garage door opener. If that doesn’t work, then move on to the next step.

You can also lubricate the mechanisms such as the rollers and springs. You can also check to see that your tracks are clear of debris and that they are aligned.

Another easy thing to check are the stop/reverse lights at the bottom of the door’s track. Sometimes insects can block the lights. If these lights are blocked by something you’re storing in your garage, not pointed in the correct direction or dirty, they can effect the operation of your door.

If your door works at times and not at other times, you may have a loose connection somewhere. Since the opener vibrates when your use it, a loose connection can be the culprit.

Check the continuity of the wires going from your opener to your your wall button or keypad. Also check the wires leading to your stop/reverse lights. Make sure that they are securely inserted into their recepticles.

While you’re at it, check that you have power to your opener. Does the light come on whey you push your button, even if the door doesn’t move.

If you are still clueless about why your garage door opener is not working, it may be time to call a professional.

You may be wondering if it is better to repair or replace your opener. The answer is that is usually much better to repair an opener than replace one. That is unless your opener’s motor is burned out. And that rarely happens.

So call a technician who can replace the parts of your opener and wind up saving money.

Object that fell through roof of New Jersey home not a meteorite

Saturday, May 12, 2007

An object that fell through the roof of a New Jersey home in January was not a meteorite, according to Jeremy Delaney, a geologist at Rutgers University. Instead, it appears the object was space junk or orbital debris.

“Basically, it’s a piece of stainless steel. There’s huge amounts of material that have been left by the various space programs of the world,” said Delaney.

The meteorite shaped object was not from a naturally occurring substance and had a silver like reflection. It weighed about the same as a small can of soup, 13 ounces (about 370 grams), but was no bigger than a golf ball.

Earlier during the incident, scientists from Rutgers examined the object visually along with police who were at the scene, and determined it was a meteorite. But further tests by geologists confirmed that it was not a meteorite, but probably a metal piece from a rocket or satellite. They had earlier thought it was made of iron.

“That’s the nature of science. If the conclusion from the test says it’s not a meteorite, then it’s not a meteorite. We have to move forward,” said Srinivasan Nageswaran, a member of the family that found the object.

Claudio Bravo signs Manchester City

Sunday, August 28, 2016

On Thursday, Spanish football club FC Barcelona announced their first-choice goalkeeper, Claudio Bravo, was sold to English club Manchester City F.C. for €18 million on a four-year deal. Manchester City is obliged to pay €2 million as add-ons.

33-year-old Claudio Bravo joined the Catalonians in the 2014 summer transfer window from Real Sociedad to replace Víctor Valdés. Bravo conceded only 43 goals in 75 matches overall, 72 La Liga matches, for the club.

In 2014, Bravo did not concede a single goal in nine consecutive league matches and set a new La Liga record for consecutive minutes without a concession. That season, he conceded only eighteen goals and won the Zamora Trophy awarded to the goalkeeper with the lowest goal-conceded-per-match ratio. He was named in the La Liga Team of the Season.

In two seasons at Camp Nou, Bravo won eight trophies — two La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys, and one each of UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Super Copa de España. Last year, Bravo led Chile to their maiden Copa América title and successfully defended the title this year in the Centenario edition of the tournament. He was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament in both tournaments.

After signing Manchester City, Bravo said, “It is not easy to leave a club like Barcelona where I had two fantastic years, but the opportunity to work with Pep Guardiola was too good to refuse.”

Earlier on Thursday, Barcelona announced signing Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen from AFC Ajax for €13 million.

Bravo faces Barcelona in the Champions League group stage, as the draw on Thursday placed Barcelona and Manchester City both in Group C.

How To Spell Resume}

Submitted by: Janis Potter

So How Do You Normally Spell Resume?

Would you know in what situation to place the accents? So many questions and so much confusion on this tiny little word; are you going to apply for a job online or are you just writing about the word and not quite sure how it should really be spelled? Do you understand the proper ways to use the accents? Let me help you to understand the proper ways on how to spell resume.

Whats With the Accent Anyways?

Most Americans spell it without any accents, which are completely acceptable, but there is the French version which the accent is (rsum), but again, the average person would not need to use these accents; especially when writing an actual resume. The computer its self must be able to find the words to sort them properly; symbols throw them off and create very strange results like (#r@$sum#) , this would be very damaging in your job search to say the least. Its important to use actual words in your resume if you want the computer to find it and recognize that you submitted it. So drop the accents and write resume, not rsum, or resum on the actual resume.

With all due respect and diligent research, it appears that there seems to be much debate and consideration on the appropriate spelling of rsum. It apparently appears that resume has become the standard, but is that because the lazy Americans cant make the effort of inserting foreign emphasis on syllables?

Where Does the Accent Go?

This is not a question the average job-seeker needs to become stressed about. Resume and rsum are always acceptable. Resum is apparently very widely used and allowed as well, although it should be avoided in areas whenever language skills are favored. Whichever spelling you prefer, make sure you use it consistently except in the case of using online where again, it can be a misconfiguration by the internet itself. There have been many different opinions about using one accented e, and can receive a negative opinion with its use. So depending upon where you are using it be quite sure that it will be acceptable in any given situation.

So, To Sum This Up in a Nut Shell

You could write resume, resume, or resum; my professional opinion would be to not use the spelling with only the one accented e. Again, it is not looked upon greatly and appears to be bad grammar and a lazy use of the word. It could be argued that, because the American language does put the importance on the first and primary syllable in the differentiation to the word resumethe first accent accordingly has some use for registering proper pronunciation. We accept this to a degree, that there is no real need for this. Subject to alterations, it seems to us that its natural for someone reading the word resum to put the primary stress on the first syllable. Thats because in English, a three-syllable word with an accent on the last syllable, normally again, as it seems to us gets the primary cause of strain on the first syllable.

Emphasized Syllables Within a Word

Emphasized syllables within a word are normally separated by one or more unemphasized syllables. Its on the basis of this rhythm pattern that an everyday speech substitute more gentle pronunciation, just as formal poetry does with its more precise diagram of sound. In resum, it would be a conflicting habit to have the strain on the second syllable, immediately followed by the secondary strain and the accent on the final syllable definitely indicates some stress there. So theres no need to write an accent to indicate the primary strain on the first syllable. When making your decision on the direction of how to spell resume, be positive that you will not be damaging any career opportunity lying ahead of you.
