MLB: Yankees’ Phil Hughes earns first win

May 2, 2007

20-year-old pitching phenom Phil Hughes cruised through hitters in just his second start for the New York Yankees, but the end result created even more frustration for the organization and fans everywhere.

Hughes retired 19 Texas Rangers without allowing a hit on Tuesday at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Established big league stars such as Kenny Lofton, Mark Teixeira and Michael Young could not solve the youngster’s blazing fastball or sharply biting curve. Hughes was on the verge of history. Even as his pitch count rose, the Yankees allowed him to keep firing. “He was fine,” manager Joe Torre said of the 2004 first round draft pick. “We were going to allow him to go 100 pitches last time, so I didn’t think that would be a problem.”

Just when the Yankees thought they found an answer to their early struggles, the organization was treated to an agonizing sight. After Teixeira fouled off an 0-2 pitch with one out in the sixth inning, Hughes grabbed his leg, having suffered a hamstring injury. His no-hit bid ended there (Texas would break up the no-hitter in the eighth inning off reliever Mike Myers), though he did earn his first big league win in a 10-1 Yankee romp over Texas. He walked off the mound under his own power, but will reportedly miss 4-6 weeks.

Hughes voiced his frustration afterwards: “It’s tough. It puts a damper on the whole thing.” He added, “I’m at a point now where our rotation really needs it,” referring to his presence on the New York pitching staff. Several Yankees have already voiced their excitement for the righthander’s chances in the big leagues. For his part, Yankees star Jason Giambi compared him to Roger Clemens during Spring Training: “He looks like a young Rocket.”

The Yankees are currently just 10-14, thanks in large part to injuries that have befallen pitchers Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina, Carl Pavano and Jeff Karstens. In a related story from today, the Yankees fired strength and conditioning coach Marty Miller. Reportedly, this was out of general manager Brian Cashman’s concern for the alarming number of hamstring injuries so far this season.

How To Purchase A Kit Home}

How To Purchase a Kit Home

Claire Winters

Kit homes are getting to be increasingly popular, as they are generally an easily affordable way to allow someone to own a home. Building a kit home may be a good alternative to the standard way of building homes for many people. Interior floor blueprints can vary in addition to the outside design of the home as there are a number of different option available. There are normally kit home options that allow the purchaser to have an input on custom design in certain areas of the home if that is something the buyer has an interest in.

There are normally four different styles or types a home kit can come in. There are log homes, panelized houses, domes, and timber style homes. When you are considering a kit home purchase, identifying what type of home is best suited for you and the area in which you live would be the first thing to decide on. Looks, maintenance, features and expense will be different with each of these four styles of homes. When thinking about any type of home purchase, cost will be the the crucial element for anyone. The same is usually true with a kit house. Kit homes can be a less expensive alternative to a traditionally built home but the type, size, and features, could eventually determine the cost of the home. Many of these homes have steel frames so the quality is typically of high quality. More fire proof than traditional homes due to the structure materials, the kit homes are often safer. Not able to catch on fire, the frames are not combustible. In addition, they are generally considered to be termite proof, which allows people all over the option to purchase these homes even if they live in an area where termites are a threat. With kit homes, usually any location would work. Sloping sites do generally not restrict these styles of homes. The structure is able to be altered to accommodate almost any environment because the steel frames are able to be customized appropriately for any location.A kit home will frequently take less than 6 weeks to construct. People faced with the dilemma of choosing between a conventional home and a kit home can be influenced by the limited time it takes to erect the structure. Able to be altered with the assistance of an architect, these kit dwellings can be changed to better meet your requirements. These homes tend to be said to be eco-friendly. This is due to the fact that the building time is fast and generally the amount of waste materials is small. These homes may also be a smart investment as often they not only retain their value, but can, over time, rise in value. Because kit homes may be generally less expensive than a traditional home option, a home loan may be less. It is possible that financing is obtainable through the supplier. Occasionally, because the home is inexpensive, people may be more apt and able to afford the home outright. When in the market for a brand new home your able to afford and still get the choice of customizing, why not consider purchasing your own home kit which can make the reality of owning a home far more realistic.

Scottish lawyer denies death of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

A Scottish lawyer today denied reports that Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi had died, after it was reported on Sky News earlier today that “unidentified sources” had said that he was dead.

The reports came onto Sky News at around 16.00 BST today. The information could not be confirmed, and it was not immediately clear where Sky News had obtained their information. Megrahi is suffering from terminal prostate cancer. Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Justice Kenny MacAskill MSP decided on 20 August 2009 to grant Megrahi compassionate release from Greenock Prison in Glasgow, Scotland and to allow him to return to Libya, after medical advisers reported that he was likely to die in just three months.

On Wednesday, Megrahi’s lawyer, Tony Kelly, responded to the claims made, saying that “it’s absolutely untrue. He’s definitely not dead. I’m not saying anything about his health condition other than the fact he is alive and breathing.” He declined to release any information about Abdelbaset’s current health condition. Following these comments, Sky News removed the information from their website.

Ottawa plans tax windfall to deal with budget surplus

Sunday, October 9, 2005

Canada’s federal government has announced a new program that plans to share unexpected budget surpluses with ordinary citizens. It should be introduced in Ottawa as early as Friday.

The Surplus Allocation Act would share any surplus equally between tax cuts, new spending and debt relief. It would not replace Canada’s $3 billion emergency fund. Under existing law any surplus is funneled completely into debt relief.

The benefit would come as an amount added on to the income tax returns of that year. It would then be added on to the amount a person can earn tax-free for each subsequent year.

Along with the new home heating oil rebate program are considered to be pre-election maneuvering from the liberals. Paul Martin has promised an election within 30 days of the Gomery Commission Report’s release. The report is expected in February.

Trade Show Displays: How To Stand Out From The Crowd

byadmin

Trade shows are essential in many industries, and setting up effective trade show displays in NYC can help your business stand out from the competition. However, coming up with a strong idea is essential for having an impact. Here are a few trade show booth ideas to consider before departing for your next show.

Understated Design

When many people think of trade show displays in NYC, they think of bright colors and eye-catching elements. However, an alternative, and often more affordable, concept is to create an understated display that lets your products stand out. Ensure your text is easy to read and make sure graphical elements displaying your products provide an uncluttered motif that lets your products’ best attributes stand out.

Interactive Design

Walking through a trade show can be an overwhelming experience due to the high concentration of booths and the sheer number of people walking around and talking. One way to impress is to include interactive elements that draw attention. Even a simple prize wheel, for example, can encourage people to stop by your booth and ask a few questions.

Digital Elements

Trade show displays in NYC now often contain digital elements, primarily monitors. However, many of these digital elements are effectively afterthoughts, meant to provide a touch of visual charm. Consider using touchscreens that provide more information than can fit on a poster. If you’re going to include video, ensure it has a professional look. Shorter videos are often the most effective.

Gaining a foothold in nearly any industry is tricky, and networking and potentially gaining new customers at trade shows is a powerful tool. Plan early when preparing for a trade show, and make sure to work with experts. Find professionals who will work with your idea, and make sure to have design elements crafted early so you can correct any problems that arise.

New York Banner Stands serves as a one-stop shop for trade show displays and other elements. Their custom printing services can help companies of all sizes, and their stands and tables help their customers create professional designs at an affordable price point.

Gunman shoots doctor, then kills mother and self at Maryland hospital

Thursday, September 16, 2010

A man shot a faculty physician as well as his own mother before killing himself at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. The shooting occurred on the eighth floor of the Nelson Building, the hospital’s main building. Baltimore police found the suspected shooter, who had been barricaded inside his mother’s hospital room for several hours before killing himself and his mother.

At around 11:15 a.m. EDT (1515 UTC), an unnamed doctor was shot in the chest at a patient area of the Nelson Building’s thoracic center. All major hospital facilities were placed under a lockdown, and some medical personnel were evacuated from the Nelson Building. The doctor was sent to surgery at the hospital, and police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said that the doctor will likely survive the incident. He was not aware of any connections between the suspect and the doctor, who was in critical condition.

A nurse at the hospital told The Baltimore Sun that the shooter was dissatisfied with how his mother had been treated and even said that he was going to jump out of a window. The nurse said that, upon hearing gunshots, she ran.

Earlier, Baltimore area police said that they were “in the process of a tactical operation” to capture the gunman, who was holed up on the eighth floor. A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said that it had been assisting local police in the incident. A Johns Hopkins spokesperson had previously said that authorities had taken the shooter into custody, but police said that the report was incorrect.

The suspect, who had not taken any hostages, was described as a black man in his thirties. After a standoff lasting for three hours, law enforcement officers moved into his mother’s hospital room, and found both him and his mother dead from gunshot wounds to their heads. The suspect was first identified as 50-year-old Warren Davis, and his mother as Jean Davis. Police later said that “Warren Davis” was an alias and that his real name was not known.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld, who said that the department is “treating this case as a murder-suicide,” said that no officers reported hearing the shots that killed the two. Police had previously said that the gunman had been shot and killed by police, but police later said that that report was incorrect.

US automaker bailout deal fails to pass Senate

Friday, December 12, 2008

A US$14 billion bailout package deal for the “Big Three” United States automakers — Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors — has been rejected in the United States Senate after failing a procedural vote.

The bill was rejected after bipartisan discussions on the bailout broke down when Republican Party leaders insisted that the United Auto Workers (UAW) union agree to increase wage cuts by next year in order to bring their pay into line with those of Japanese automobile companies in the United States. The UAW refused to meet the demands.

The final vote count in the Senate was 52-35, eight short of the 60 needed to pass. Only ten Republicans joined forty Democrats and two independents in voting for the bill. Three Democrats voted with thirty-one Republicans against it.

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid said that he was “terribly disappointed” by the failure of the bill to pass. “I dread looking at Wall Street tomorrow. It’s not going to be a pleasant sight,” Reid said. “Millions of Americans, not only the auto workers but people who sell cars, car dealerships, people who work on cars are going to be directly impacted and affected.”

Republican Senator Bob Corker was also unhappy about the rejection. “We were about three words away from a deal. We solved everything substantively and about three words keep us from reaching a conclusion,” he said.

Some Democrats now want U.S. President Bush to reserve a portion of the $700 billion bailout package earmarked for Wall Street to assist the flagging car industry.

Stock markets worldwide fell dramatically on the news, with Japan’s Nikkei average losing 484.68 points, or 5.6 percent, reaching a level of 8253.87 points. Shares in the auto companies Toyota, Nissan and Honda all dropped by no less than 10 percent apiece. European stocks, such as those in the United Kingdom and Germany, also lost ground, with the FTSE-100 index of leading shares falling 176.3 points to a level of 4,211 at midday.

Cheer Your Favorite Tampa Bay Sports Team To Victory With A Game Watching Party

Submitted by: Taylor Thomas

When you can t make it to the big game, enjoy the next best thing by hosting a game-watching party with your closest friends. While it may not provide quite the same thrill as sitting on the 50-yard line, you re still sure to have a great time. But how should you go about planning your soiree? By following just a few simple steps, you can plan a game-watching party that your guests won t forget anytime soon.

Decorate Your Party Space

The easiest way to create a festive atmosphere is to decorate your party space with your team s colors. Whether you re cheering on the Bucs, the Rays, or the Lightning, you shouldn t have any trouble finding party decorations in the appropriate colors. For instance, putting up some black and red streamers and using football-shaped serving trays and paper plates is an easy and effective way to let your guests know you re hoping for a Bucs victory. Likewise, using black, white, and blue decorations is perfect for showing some Lightning team spirit while dark blue, light blue, and yellow provides a Rays-friendly atmosphere.

Plan the Perfect Menu

You have a few options when it comes to choosing your game-watching party s menu. Your safest bet may be to serve recipes you re already familiar with and that you know will be crowd pleasers. This might include a variety of appetizers and finger foods, like your world-famous deviled eggs, your mom s scrumptious artichoke dip, and Susie s out-of-this-world buffalo chicken dip. Or, you could serve a full-fledged meal, such as pizza, lasagna, chili, or hotdogs and hamburgers. Remember that if you feel overwhelmed thinking about making food for a large group of people, you could always ask your guests to bring their favorite dishes to share.

Quench Your Guests Thirst

First and foremost, you need to decide whether or not your party will be alcohol-free. If you d rather your guests not imbibe at your gathering, be sure to convey that ahead of time. Otherwise, you need to decide whether you ll be providing your guests with beverages or you d like your event to be BYOB (bring your own beer). Most guests won t take any issue to bringing their own beverages, so there s certainly no need for you to feel obligated to provide a keg or a full bar. Whatever you do, make sure your guests drink responsibly, and don t let any of them drive home if you feel they ve had too much to drink. In fact, it might not be a bad idea to offer up your couch and a few sleeping bags ahead of time, so your inebriated friends won t have to feel funny about asking if they can stay the night.

Assemble Your Guest List

Depending on your personality (and your particular group of friends), you may want to limit your guest list to friends who will be cheering on your favorite team right along with you. Or, if you aren t too worried about any arguments breaking out, you can extend an invitation to those who you know will be rooting for the opposing team. Just do what you think will provide the most jovial atmosphere for you and your guests. Since your game-watching party is likely to be a casual affair, there s no need to send out formal invitations. To get the word out, simply call up some friends, send out a few texts, or create an event on Facebook.

Planning your very own game-watching party really can be this easy. You and your guests are sure to have a blast cheering on your favorite Tampa sports team, whether it s the Bucs, the Rays, or the Lightning.
