Two ill after eating burgers laced with multi-purpose cleaner in Bathurst, Australia

Thursday, March 25, 2010

A prank by three young kitchen staff at Hungry Jack’s fast food restaurant in the Central-Western New South Wales city of Bathurst went wrong when two customers required medical treatment after eating burgers they had laced with multi-purpose cleaner.

According to staff at the Emergency Department of Bathurst Hospital, two Hungry Jack’s customers became ill Sunday night after eating burgers contaminated with a chemical believed to be multi-purpose cleaner. One of the patrons was in a serious condition upon arrival at Bathurst Hospital due to being allergic to an ingredient in the cleaning product. “He presented to the emergency department as he was having an allergic reaction after eating a burger from Hungry Jacks, he was in a really bad way when he arrived here and if he had waited much longer it could have been much worse,” said a Greater Western Area Health Service employee. “We called Hungry Jacks and they said that three of their employees had been goofing off and sprayed multi-purpose cleaner inside the burgers so we then treated the patients for poisoning.”

Both customers are expected to make a full recovery. During an investigation undertaken by Wikinews reporter Nathan Carter, it was learned that the chemical sprayed into the burgers was KAY multipurpose cleaner which is reported to cause nausea, diarrhoea and mucosal and gastric irritation. The Material Safety Data Sheet for KAY multipurpose cleaner lists Antonic Surfactants as its hazardous ingredient.

In New South Wales, it is a criminal offence to make food intended for sale unsafe punishable by 2 years imprisonment. Due to restrictions on the publication of the name of young people involved in crimes in New South Wales, the names of kitchen staff can not be published. Wikinews was told by Hungry Jack’s staff that the staff involved in the incident remained employed by Hungry Jack’s. Josh, a Hungry Jack’s manager at the Bathurst restaurant, told Wikinews that his boss Adam was aware of the food contamination issue and would be taking steps to address it.

How To Acquire Home Insurance Quotes In Boston

byAlma Abell

Massachusetts homeowners may not receive the full benefits of their selected policy to protect their property. This is the case when they don’t evaluate products available to them fully. The first step in addressing this need is to establish the exact value of your home. If you’re in the process of buying, this information is readily available to you. However, if you’ve been paying a mortgage for a significant amount of time, you need to acquire an appraisal.

How to Buy Homeowner’s Insurance

Like mortgage lenders, insurers conduct a risk assessment for you. The basis of common risk factors are your job, current assets, and lifestyle. They present the insurer with statistics about you that determine whether you present a higher risk than average.

As an example, homeowners who are smokers increase the risk of a house fire. Insurance carriers consider this element when tailoring insurance policies. If you’d like to receive Home Insurance Quotes in Boston based on this factor, contact your preferred carrier now.

Comparison Shopping for Insurance

Here’s how to determine which carrier is right for you. Instead of presenting themselves as possessing the lowest rates, they’ll provide you with Home Insurance Quotes in Boston for the same products offered by other companies. When they perform this task correctly, they won’t always be identified as the most affordable option.

The point is, however; to review the terms of the policy and determine, which meets your needs adequately. The policy should offer a wide range of benefits, including the full replacement cost of your property. You’ll need housing allowance, in the event that a disaster strikes. Review your policy to establish what disasters and other events are covered. Some policies won’t protect you against floods. Visit for more details.

A full assessment of homeowner’s insurance policies helps you find the correct option for your circumstances. Discounts are often available to homeowners under certain conditions, which are beyond standard opportunities. However, you should inquire about discounts based on your lifestyle when common risks are reduced. If you wish to acquire free Home Insurance Quotes in Boston, you should contact Sawyer Insurance Agency Inc. today.

Romanian trade unions threaten more protests

Thursday, October 8, 2009

Thousands of Romanian public sector workers gathered outside government headquarters in Bucharest on Wednesday to rally against the planned downsizing of the public sector. They protested planned pay cuts and growing job insecurity, as well as the so-called single wage bill, which will in effect freeze pay in the sector for an indefinite period.

Threatening further protests, union leaders called on voters to boycott the November 22nd presidential elections. The government, meanwhile, faces a no-confidence vote next week.

Bogdan Hossu, leader of Cartel Alfa Union, recalled that President Traian B?sescu had told reporters he would not seek a second term if the number of unemployed reaches one million people.

As many as 15,000 people from all over Romania joined Wednesday’s demonstration. It followed a one-day strike Monday, when up to 800,000 teachers, doctors, nurses, policemen, clerks and other public sector employees took to the streets in what has been described as Romania’s largest protest in the last 80 years.

The catalyst was adoption of reform measures aimed at cutting the swollen budget deficit and meeting commitments spelled out in an IMF-led financial rescue package worth nearly 20 billion euros.

“We need these measures to be taken now. If not, it could lead to a prolonged recession,” the AFP quoted Nicolae Chidesciuc, senior economist at ING Romania, as saying Wednesday.

But the government’s recent move to reform the public pay scale — ending intricate bonus programmes and effectively reducing the wages of most employees in the public sector — caused an uproar.

Chanting “thieves! thieves!”, the participants in Wednesday’s rally demanded that the government to resign. “You promised us, then you forgot us,” they shouted.

“The authorities forced us to the streets again; we did not want this to happen today, on the World Day for Decent Work, as we are now celebrating indecent work,” said Aurel Cornea, vice-president of the Teachers’ Union, one of the four trade unions that organised the rally.

The list of demands they submitted Wednesday called for the minimum wage to be increased from its current level of around 145 euros to 176 euros per month in 2010 and to 310 euros per month in 2014, and for an improvement of the salary scales under the unitary pay law for the public sector. They also urged authorities to scrap provisions introducing a mandatory unpaid leave of ten days a year.

According to Romanian media reports, the unions are also pressing the government to increase economic investment, support economic agencies, create jobs, protect workers and ensure decent pensions.

Romania has been hit badly by the global economic turmoil. According to IMF estimates for 2009, the country’s budget deficit is expected to top 7.3% of GDP and the economy will shrink by 8.5% this year.

Prime Minister Emil Boc, whose government faces a no-confidence vote in parliament on Tuesday, has urged the unionists to halt their protests until after next month’s presidential elections.

Egypt protests: Army say they will not use force on demonstrators as Mubarak announces cabinet

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

The president of Egypt has suffered a “devastating blow” after the country’s army announced they would not use force against their own people, who continue to protest against the government tonight. The news came hours after six journalists who reported on the protests were released from custody.

Hosni Mubarak yesterday announced a new cabinet, which does not include several figures who protesters largely do not approve of. Analysts have, however, suggested little had changed within the government; many positions, they say, are filled with military figures.

To the great people of Egypt, your armed forces, acknowledging the legitimate rights of the people … have not and will not use force against the Egyptian people.

In a statement broadcast on state media in Egypt, the army said: “To the great people of Egypt, your armed forces, acknowledging the legitimate rights of the people … have not and will not use force against the Egyptian people.” A BBC correspondent in Cairo said the announcement meant it “now seems increasingly likely that the 30-year rule of Mr Mubarak is drawing to a close.”

“The presence of the army in the streets is for your sake and to ensure your safety and wellbeing. The armed forces will not resort to use of force against our great people,” the statement added. “Your armed forces, who are aware of the legitimacy of your demands and are keen to assume their responsibility in protecting the nation and the citizens, affirms that freedom of expression through peaceful means is guaranteed to everybody.”

Earlier today, six journalists from the independent news network Al-Jazeera were released from custody after being detained by police. The U.S. State Department criticized the arrests; equipment was reportedly confiscated from the journalists.

Egyptian officials yesterday ordered the satellite channel to stop broadcasting in the country. Al-Jazeera said they were “appalled” by the government’s decision to close its Egyptian offices, which they described as the “latest attack by the Egyptian regime to strike at its freedom to report independently on the unprecedented events in Egypt.”

In a statement, the news agency added: “Al-Jazeera sees this as an act designed to stifle and repress the freedom of reporting by the network and its journalists. In this time of deep turmoil and unrest in Egyptian society it is imperative that voices from all sides be heard; the closing of our bureau by the Egyptian government is aimed at censoring and silencing the voices of the Egyptian people.”

On Friday, Wikinews reported the government had shut off practically all Internet traffic both out of and into the nation, as well as disrupting cellphone usage. A spokesperson for the social networking website Facebook said “limiting Internet access for millions of people is a matter of concern for the global community.”

A reported 50,000 campaigners, who are demanding the long-time leader step down and complaining of poverty, corruption, and oppression, filled Tahrir Square in Cairo today, chanting “We will stay until the coward leaves.” It is thought 100 people have so far died in the demonstrations. Today there have been protests in Suez, Mansoura, Damanhour, and Alexandria.

Speaking to news media in the area, many protesters said the new cabinet did little to quell their anger. “We want a complete change of government, with a civilian authority,” one said. Another added: “This is not a new government. This is the same regime—this is the same bluff. [Mubarak] has been bluffing us for 30 years.”

In Tahrir Square today, protesters played music as strings of barbed wire and army tanks stood nearby. Demonstrators scaled light poles, hanging Egyptian flags and calling for an end to Mubarak’s rule. “One poster featured Mubarak’s face plastered with a Hitler mustache, a sign of the deep resentment toward the 82-year-old leader they blame for widespread poverty, inflation and official indifference and brutality during his 30 years in power,” one journalist in the square reported this evening.

Why Hire A Painting Contractor?

byadmin

Painting or redecorating, whether it be a residential or commercial space, is a difficult and expensive job, and many try doing the painting themselves to save money. However, the cost of a contractor to do the job for you is worth the expense in both money and time. Here are a few reasons why:

Professional Service

No matter how good your DIY skills, nothing can beat the professional touch of a company with years of training and experience behind them. Our team can also deal with any unexpected or difficult issues that should arise.

Time Saving

The money saved on painting yourself could actually be less compared to the time lost from doing the task. Residential and commercial painting contractors will not only finish the job in a shorter amount of time but will free up your time for your own work or commitments. If you run a business, operations won’t be interrupted for too long while waiting for the paint job to be finished.

Additional Services

You might decide that painting alone isn’t enough for your remodeling. We also provide concrete polishing and overlays that will bring a fresh new look to your concrete floors. There is no point in having newly painted walls if your floors don’t meet the same standard.

Preparation

If you are unfamiliar with decoration, it could be hard for you to decide upon the best color, tone, shade, and combinations to choose. This is all part of the service we provide to make your space look its best, eliminating the need to re-paint an unsatisfactory job.

Hiring a painting contractor, in addition to a concrete polisher, to redecorate your home or business will save your more than just money. It also allows for a professional and knowledgable service that will save you time and last for many years with little need for maintenance, repairs, or redecoration.

KKE: Interview with the Greek Communist Party

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Wikinews reporter Iain Macdonald has performed an interview with Dr Isabella Margara, a London-based member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). In the interview Margara sets out the communist response to current events in Greece as well as discussing the viability of a communist economy for the nation. She also hit back at Petros Tzomakas, a member of another Greek far-left party which criticised KKE in a previous interview.

The interview comes amid tensions in cash-strapped Greece, where the government is introducing controversial austerity measures to try to ease the nation’s debt-problem. An international rescue package has been prepared by European Union member states and the International Monetary Fund – should Greece require a bailout; protests have been held against government attempts to manage the economic situation.
