Investigation wanted into the murders of Iraqi academics

Majid Majhoul Hawi al-Moussawi said his family “locked the door and left for Syria, the only country that would have us. We are grateful, but there is no work. There is nothing for us here.” He took his family out of Baghdad after his daughter Hanan, 16, was kidnapped.

Professionals in Iraq say they face a deteriorating situation. Young physicians are looking for other countries to train in and even the patients are leaving, no longer confident in the care they can get in Iraq.

Dr. Omar Kubasi supported the claims that a systematic campaign to destroy Iraqi academia is occurring, stating, “I think it’s part of the plan for the country’s destruction. The situation in the last six months has gotten so bad, we couldn’t continue.”

Amer Hassan Fayed, assistant dean of political science at Baghdad University said; “It’s creating a brain drain, we could end up with a society without knowledge. How can such a society make progress?”

Hundreds of Iraqi academics have been assassinated since the U.S.-led coalition invasion in March 2003, and there have been no charges brought against any suspects in the murders.

Caroline Lucas, the Green Party MEP for Southeast England, is calling for a United Nations investigation into the killings which, she said, is forcing thousands of Iraqi educators to flee for their lives.

“Iraq is undergoing a major brain drain, and can ill afford to lose academics and teachers to a continuing wave of violence. Iraq’s education system, once one of the best in the region, has been decimated: some 84 percent of the country’s higher education institutions have been burned, looted or destroyed, according to the United Nations University. These assassinations, which appear to be countrywide, non-partisan and non-sectarian, must be investigated by the U.N. Special Rapporteur on summary executions — and those responsible brought to justice. Iraq needs security and stability, but it is clear that the continued U.S. and (British) occupation is contributing to the problem, not the solution,” Lucas said.

Bank of America attempts takeover of Merrill Lynch

Monday, September 15, 2008

Bank of America (BoA) is attempting a takeover of Merrill Lynch, which, if successful, would combine two of the largest banks in the world. BoA would buy Merrill Lynch for around $44 billion in stock. BoA, the largest bank in the United States, has been looking for a major acquisition for the last few months. The bank was seen as a possible buyer of Lehman Bothers before it pulled out, citing lack of financial support by the U.S. government, and possible shareholder problems.

Merrill’s CEO John Thain is believed to have initiated the discussion with Kenneth Lewis, BoA’s chief executive. It is believe that Merrill has been suffering major problems with a lack of cash on hand to operate its business. According to The New York Times, Thain believes that unless it can secure a deal with another bank, then it could possible face a collapse. Thain also believes that the U.S. government would not step in to stop such a collapse, as with the current situation with Lehman Brothers.

BoA would buy Merrill at $29 a share. On Friday, Merill stock price closed at $17.05.

Merrill Lynch has suffered a massive drop in its share price over the last year, down 68 percent due to subprime mortgage crisis. Merrill had over $10 billion pumped into the bank in December 2007 and January 2008 by sovereign wealth funds.

Different Style Curtains and which are Best for your Home

Curtains and window treatments can give your interior a lovely facelift for relatively little money. Choosing the right curtains for your windows can change the look and feel of your house in ways that you have probably never imagined. Window treatments provide more benefit to your house than a fashion statement and listed below are a few things you may not know about curtains and window treatments and how they affect your home.

Why Curtains Are Important

Curtains serve many purposes such as filtering light, they provide privacy, and they add color and style. The curtains that you choose will directly affect the amount of natural light in the room. In most homes, aside from the floor and the walls, windows are the largest area available for decoration. What do you think about when you choose curtains for your room?

Think about the room

You should consider which room is getting new curtains along with how much natural light you need in that room. These factors are important when choosing curtains for your home. In bedrooms, for instance, you’ll want curtains or window treatments that can block light effectively for sleeping hours. Bare windows provide no privacy at all, and look stark and bare from the outside. If heavy draperies are not to your liking, you might opt for lighter curtains backed by blinds or room-darkening shades that can be opened during the day.

In the kitchen, living room or sitting room, on the other hand, you may prefer window treatments that allow sunlight into your room. One popular option is a valance or window scarf that adds some interest to the window without blocking light. One of the most popular styles for kitchens allows light while still providing a modicum of privacy. Cape Cod style curtains usually consist of a valance and a pair of tiers that hang over the bottom half of the window. Cape Cods also can be a nice choice for a teen bedroom or a bed-sitting room, especially if the entire ensemble is backed by a sheer curtain in a coordinating color.

Choosing the right material

Windows that face east or west will get direct sunlight in the morning or the afternoon. South facing windows get direct sun all day long. If those windows are not shaded in some way by trees or blinds, the strong sunlight may make rooms too warm or fade fabrics. If that is the case, you might consider mini-blinds or window shades to help keep the room cooler.

Remember that the opposite works as well those rooms will get warmer in the winter if you choose curtains that can be opened wide to let the sunlight in.

Change the feeling of your room with curtains

Curtains can change the entire feeling of your room. While color and pattern play a big role in that, style also has an effect. In general, shorter curtains provide a more casual effect. Caf curtains have a homey, casual appeal that is very appealing in a country style kitchen or dining room. Curtains that reach the windowsill are a bit more formal, and curtains that sweep the floor are dramatic and reminiscent of drawing rooms in upper class mansions.

Another rule of thumb for choosing curtains to highlight the style of your room is the amount of window that can be seen. If you have a fabulous view, choose curtains that are off the window entirely to allow the walls to frame the view. If, on the other hand, your window faces a brick wall, pretty lace curtains will obscure the view and keep the focus on the interior of the room.

Designer Window Tricks

Window treatments and curtains can also camouflage a multitude of flaws. Here are a few tricks that designers use to even up window sizes and fool the eye in other ways to make your rooms look better.

If you have different size windows, choose the largest window and dress it first. Hang the rest of the curtains at the same height. If it’s possible, make sure that all the curtain hems are at the same height as well, even if that means choosing a longer length than the window needs.

To create the illusion of wider windows, extend the curtain rod beyond the window frame. To make a window look shorter, choose a window treatment with a deep valance.

Make your room more comfortable in the winter by hanging heavier drapes in sumptuous fabrics. Lighten up for spring by trading out the winter drapes for brighter colors and sheer fabrics.

There are many different types of curtains available for your home and choosing the correct design can affect your home’s interior greatly. Making the decision comes down to which room you are looking to improve and the amount of natural light you need. When purchasing new curtains, you can use these tips to help make the process easier.

BBC Television Centre placed up for sale

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

The BBC Television Centre has been placed up for sale by the corporation. Plans to sell the centre originally came forward in 2007 but the BBC only appointed Lambert Smith Hampton, a commercial property consultant, in November of last year. The building which is based in Shepherds Bush, London was opened in 1960 and is the home of BBC News and BBC Vision.

The BBC stated they were interested in preserving parts of the building while setting up a “hub for creative businesses and a visitor destination.” According to the head of BBC Workplace, Chris Kane, “With high investor demand for commercial property in London and a shortage of landmark sites as distinctive as Television Centre, we anticipate strong competition for both conventional and innovative proposals.”

The property has been valued between £150 million to £300 million but is expected to fetch around £200 million.

5000 staff are currently based at the centre which BBC bosses hope to be empty by 2015. The BBC is creating a new development in Salford, Greater Manchester. Several departments including BBC Sport, BBC Breakfast, and children’s shows are moving to Salford while BBC News is being relocated within central London.

Improves Your Image

When you keep your awnings well maintained, you are able to create a better look for your home or any place that they are installed at. Awnings are used to make a place look attractive.
